So do you tell us what you have tweaked in the BIOS of your 386 or is it a secret? 😜

f.e. if I set the ISA BUS of my 386DX-40 to CLK/3 it still runs, but my ET4000 gives already some random pixels.

I tested various ISA and PCI cards on one and the same board with identical Bios settings:

In VGA, yes. Need VESA modes. Then it transforms into one speedy DOS card. There is a utility that Rendition released that remaps some non-VESA modes to VESA modes and you get a huge speed increase. The util is called "renutil" and you can find it in my Rendition thread (in sig). It won't help for apps that use Mode X though (ie Doom and Dark Forces).

I think they emulate non-VESA VGA modes or something like that but VESA modes get accelerated by the graphics processor.

It took a lot of tweaking and testing to get a reliable and stable system at this speed with no VLB wait states. My 3DBench 1.0 score is 90.9! 😎

108 on am5x86?
jesus christ i hope those are stable results and you're using the adz variant
it's beating out the geforce4-equipped pentium 100 for crying out loud!

Yes, it is stable with a lot of waitstates. The CPU is of the ADW variant, it runs at 5V. I tested dozens of them during the last years. This is the only one that still boots at 200 MHz and loads DOS. Unfortunately it hangs when an application is started.

That must be the fastest socket 3 board on planet earth! I notice it's a PCI board. Looking at your awesome score, there doesn't appear to be any sign of the infamous PCI "suckage" that is commonly associated with PCI and this type of board. What's your view on this? Generally speaking, is a socket 3 PCI board perfectly satisfactory, or would you consider a decent VLB/ISA board to be superior to all PCI boards?

Hello, and congratulations for this wonderful site. I really love old pcs, and I have an almost complete collection ranging from 8088 to P3s. Recently I acquired several different 386/40 motherboards, and I've been running some benchmarks, so as to choose the best one to fit into my 386 pc. I run 3dbench 1.0c and my score is 17.4. My specs are : AMD-386DX-40-1-40-Unknown-TAM/33/40U2(3)-UMC UM82c491F-128kB-ISA-CL5422-1MB-Tweaked-Markk . I suppose it's rather good for an ISA card! The only change in BIOS is the AT Clock set to CPU/2 rather than CPU/5 that is the default setting. When set to CPU/5 the score is 15.8. My other 386/40 motherboards are equipped with opti, ali and MX chipsets. I have not tested them using 3dbench, but as soon as I have some time I will, before I pack and store them. I chose this motherboard because of the landmark speed test result which was about 0,5-1 MHz faster than the others..

Thanks for the new results! Will update the database shortly.

Just like to mention that I don't want this to turn into a overclocking database 🤣 It's more meant as a reference sheet to see if your system performs like it should and for DOSBox / slowdown related speed tests.

Still that's an amazing score for a 486...

Yeah please don't forget about the Slot1 part. Pentium II results are all absent and I know you all have P2s in a corner somewhere including the younger ones.

Pentium Pro?

Hey Markk can you rerun with 3dbench 1.0 please?

1.0c is meant for machines > 99fps and isn't as precise for slower machines.

I put your specs in the sheet just waiting for the final score!

Also I made the decision to not include overclocking results. While certainly interesting to see what's possible with old hardware, I would like this sheet to become more of a reference rather than overclocking competition...

Looking at the results we have plenty of scores for 386 and 486...

We could need more scores for the Pentium and Slot 1 class...

Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium 2, Pentium 3 but also Super Socket 7 stuff, excotic cpus from Cyrix and IDT

Mau1wurf1977 to be honest, I tried v. 1.0 first, but I got a message that there's an error in PAK file, so then I tried v.1.0c and it worked. But it may also be my floppy disk faulty, so I'm going to try again using another one soon. I'm now going to assemble my 386 pc, into the case, etc. Meanwhile, I tested my pentium. Specs are : Intel-PentiumMMX-66-3.5-233-Soyo-5EA-Eteq-512kB-PCI-Diamond Stealth 3D 2000-4MB-Default-Markk , and the score is 147.1 fps.

edit : I've some slot 1 motherboards, and CPUs P2 333 and 400 I think, and P3 450-500. And also several agp vgas. If you want I can get them out to try sometime.
