Sorry for the offtopic, but "arachne" actually reminds me of the greek word "αράχνη" (which is spelled arachni, with emphasis on the 2nd a (ά)) and means spider. Actually this is pretty damn the same word in english and greek, just with different writing! 😁 Everything's connected out there, people! We just don't realise it! xD

It seems that this is the case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachne 😁 😁

Curoius enough the Zenith has Arachne as part of its FCC ID.

Won't work, even Cello and NCSA Mosaic already required a Win 3.x running on a 386 in enhanced mode.
Better try DOSLynx or maybe Arachne.

I did manage to get an early version Mosaic connected using winpkt.com and Trumpnet Winsock 1.1 but the results were less than stella, which is to be expected I guess.

Netscape 4.08 will sort-of-run in standard mode so it might be worth a try:

Thank you for the reference. Certainly worth a crack just for the sake of it. I suspect I'll have to install it on my 486 first then transfer it across if the installer borks.

Don't know if anyone still monitors this, been playing with my 286 recently using a dedicated DOS or Windows 3.1 CF Card depending what I want to play with.

Recently been playing with Windows and yes I can get Google up and do a search using winsock and NCSA Mosaic (v2 alpha), pretty fast as well, but...

you have to scroll down to the bottom of the web page through all the code Mosaic does not understand (to be expected) and yes, only a few webpages open but it is all good fun, you can see the google image of the day and the search box!

So yes it is 'sort' of possible and intresting seeing what works. My 286 runs at 25mhz and has 16mb of ram but still a 286 at heart.

It appears there are a couple 286 class browsers for 3.x including this one I’ve never heard of, seems to run ok

Cool! 😎 I read there's TCP/IP network stack named NetManage Chameleon 3.10 which seems to be running in Windows 3.0 Real-Mode, even! 🙂
