I'd written an entire post but seems I forgot to actually post it 😵

Anyway, the ASUS TX97-XE can't cache more then 64MB memory.
The Voodoo 1 might be too fast for the CPU (5x86)
Instead of 2k, why not use a slipstreamed version of XP?

I'm disappointed that the TX97 is such a dog. I've since learned it can't overclock very well either. Too bad, because the XE is in ATX form factor, and I would have been able to use one of my cases. Now I'll have to find another AT case.

I realize the Voodoo is wasted on a 5x86 system. But to do it right I'd have to pair it with like a P166. I could put it on the Shuttle board with one, I suppose. I sure wish I had a Mystique 220 to go with it.

I'll stick with 2k on the K6 system, 'cause it has that retro feel to it more than XP does. Nothing to do with performance or anything, I just like that ME look 😀

You can work around the cacheable area by installing a K6-III in there though.

I don't have a K6-III, unfortunately. I have plenty of K6/K6-II, though.

Well, what I suppose I'll do is use the HOT-555a board with the V2 and a P233MMX. I'll use the TX97 with the V1 and a P166. The K6-II, VA503+ and Voodoo 3 go well together age-wise. What I'd really love for the V3 would be a BH6 and a Celery 300a, but those are probably very rare these days.

I find it hard to imagine the Celeron 300A being rare. And anyway, you 'could' get a better processor for your BX board easily 😉

Rare? I would say not. But a Celeron 300A @ 450, a BX6 R2 coupled with a Voodoo3 would be an awesome build, that's what I ran back in 1999. 😁

I was going to try this, but I don't think 440LX would be appropriate for the task

Did you find the cache module for it?

Yes, I have 2 of these modules. One works fine and the other causes major instability. They are both identical, so I assume something was damaged on the one that doesn't work right. It shows up as 256kB as it should, but I can't make the computer run stably long enough to boot with it.

At any rate, the other module works fine, and the reason I know what a major impact it has on Win98SE is because when I had installed the OS, I got most of the way through configuration before I realized that I hadn't inserted the cache module yet. After inserting the cache module it made a very noticeable difference in the speed of both the Explorer shell and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.

Some might say this is because of the Tag RAM that supposedly accompanies these modules, but my system was running on 32MB at the time.

Depending on how fast your RAM is running, cache on any 486 would make a big difference. As far as I can tell, these modules have standard 15 ns, 28-pin cache pieces. For your bad stick, I suppose you could check all the capacitors and resistors, and if they all check out, start replacing each cache piece until you find the bad one. The cache replacement is easier said that done if you don't work in an electronics manufactoring environment.

From my experience with my M919 cache modules, they sometimes don't get seated right.
