A guy from my country sells his Yamaha YMF718-S for $3.5 + ~$3 shipping. It's slightly damaged, he doesn't make a secret out of it. He tested the card and it worked fine.

Should I buy it? I never had a Yamaha before and I want it really bad.

What is the overheated chip responsible for?

What can you say about the card itself? I already have Sound Blaster 32 PnP and Live! in the target system, will adding YMF718 make a difference?

P.S. I don't trust international post when it comes to Russia, so ebay is not for me.

These cards shouldn't be hard to find, so I would just keep looking 😀

I can't think of what would've caused the chip to overheat/fail in the first place, but it's pretty obvious that the one on there now is a replacement... so it may be that whatever problem it had, has been solved.

I personally wouldn't buy that card, since they're quite common around here. But it sounds like they're a bit harder to find where you are, so if you want it, go for it. It's been repaired, the guy says it works, and it pretty cheap... so it's not like you'd be taking a big risk.

So I installed the card and now I'm really happy with it!

At first I turned on the PC, w98 automatically installed some standard driver for it and it was noisy as hell. That was quite a disappointment, but than I downloaded original drivers from Yamaha and the sound became clear and quite perfect. Actually, so far it's the clearest retro sound card I own! 😀

... and Phil and Old Thrashbarg were right, they are quite common. To this point I already have 3 YMF71x cards as well as YMF711 inside Libretto 50CT and YMF715 onboard PD440FX. I wasn't even on the lookout for one, they were just passing by.
