Ti 4200 is much easier to find and almost as fast. But XP was also around for that card.

Geforce 3 and XP launched around the same time.

So for W98 you are looking at cards ranging from Voodoo to TNT2, Geforce and Geforce 2.

What do you want to do with the W98 PC?

I wouldn't try to build the "ultimate" W98 PC, just a good one. You will save a ton of money. Stick with parts easy to find. But do your own research, we can't tell you what to get, just point you in a direction.

Get a few things, play with them, it's all part of the journey.

Exactly!

For me personally I really love to help people, but they should also be wanting to help themselves.

@ Serpant: In my signature is a link to a topic I made that has a LOT of links and is specifically written for people new to building old computers. Have a look, read, learn and be fascinated 😀

What games do you want to play?

I'm have zero experience with that Voodoo card and there could be some (glide) games that will not work on it.

A 19" Samsung which I got from work.

Don't be so fixated on what exact model. Get what's cheap, build a machine and see how you go. You will often find that the theory doesn't live up to reality and once you have a machine in front of you requirements will become more obvious.

No point spending big dollars to find out something doesn't work.

What parts have you already got?

I have some IDE ATA cables (HDD, ODD, FDD) and beep speaker, speakers (7.1 in Korea), keyboard and mouse (both are cabled) in my house.

Note: Luckily, I can find Noctua on Ebay as same product 😊(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CQTYL6/r … =A1H9NMCPZH97BO, www.ebay.com/itm/Noctua-80mm-NF-R8-1800 ... 1419(Ebay))

Do you have any suggestion for P3-S Tualatin 1.4Ghz CPU cooler? I hope that I can find some products on Amazon since it is cheaper than Ebay xd.

Board for P3B-F Rev 1.04 on Amazon and Ebay: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=se … -F%20Rev%201.04, http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p20464 … cat=0&_from=R40

Win 98 SE (include Plus!) on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=se … 3AWindows+98+SE, http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0009F … id=&seller=&sr=

SONY ODD: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_0?rh=n%3A … 028&rnid=493964

SONY FDD: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007E8AY/r … =A3O1S290ZINMVG

Vortex 2: http://www.ebay.com/itm/A-Vortex-2-AU8830A2-T … =item3a8581618d

Can you find a Intel PRO PCI as well on Ebay and Amazon (I searched them but I was unsatfisfied to find boxed one with cables, etc)?

My links: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Interface-AddOn-Cards … mCondition=1000, http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Intel-PRO-100-PCI … =item3cc80318ff

Another note: It's madness to find a boxed Voodoo 5500 AGP since I need wires and drivers to connect it to that PC(http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p20464 … cat=0&_from=R40)!! 😠 😵

I have a 1.03 as well and I'm running a Tualatin 1.4ghz in it. I've also tested a P3 800 which worked fine. So I'm afraid that your statement is incorrect.

I would ofc try and get 1.04 if possible (I don't know the changes though), but if you can't, then 1.03 is a safe choice. Stay away from the earlier revisions (1.01 and 1.02) if you want to run with Tualatin.

Interesting- http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/list.aspx? … uage=en&m=P3B-F

It wouldn't be the first time that I was wrong- all I can do is to state the best info that I have in an effort to be helpful. I will try to do better. - If it makes you feel any better, I kept my own 98se machine running on the v 1.03 mb to a P3 600 (.25 micron) with the slow cache because of my own research. 😀 My rev 1.04 had no ISA slot so was not a good choice for use as a legacy board. And yes, I do know that there are rev 1.04 boards with an ISA option... just haven't stumbled across a fully functional one yet.

I also understand that the 1.04 supports Coppermine chips with no issues. Thank you for the correction and the knowledge.

You don't need a boxed voodoo5. The drivers are avilable for free over here: http://www.falconfly.de/vsa100.htm (Voodoo4/5 section), and the cards don't need any special cables or anything. You just stick it in and connect the VGA cable and go.

Oh really? I did not notice that. Then, how can I get VGA cable from Ebay Amazon (I was worrying since the modern GPUs contain cables for connection)? Is Lian-Li still manufactures a case that supports FDD bay, middle tower or larger, multi HDD bays (it is easy to multi boot but I'm not sure for considering as essential)?

Here's my partition plan for dual booting with this rig: Linux-might be 50GB (or more) {Since it is smaller than Windows}
Windows and DOS- Gees, I'm not sure how should I give some space since Linux needs 2 primary partitions and differnet from NT systems (Plz give an instruction with drives like C Drive, A Drive, etc).

Note: Can you explain how to choose hign-end modern monitors? Is HDD that is larger than 120GB benefit to me?

Note 2: Thanks for giving driver files 😊

Note 3: Which GPU manucfacturer do you prefer (3DFX, nVIDIA)? I prefer nVIDIA since it has huge advantages than 3dfx (i would like to use Geforce unless there were no Glide supported games like Diablo (Voodoo PCI was dissapeared a day ago so I need to stick 5500 AGP one)

Note 4 (Win 98 SE on Amazon): http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?rh=n%3A … rnid=2941120011 (is Plus! pack is useful for me?), http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=se … =P3B-F+REV+1.04

if you're new to this, a good way to climb aboard is by buying an old OEM P3/ P4 pc and playing around with it. You can get them real cheap and guaranteed working from used shops in the Klang Valley.

I'm not sure what he's up to. He's been asking questions which we have answered (over and over) for almost a month now and as far as I know, he hasn't gotten one step closer during that time, except for asking even more questions.

Your suggestion is a good one and I fully second it 😉

I have been already undersood your statements and put them in the notepad so I can remember them properly. The thing that I'am asking you guys is price comparison between Amazon and Ebay. I found that the price of Windows 98 SE on Ebay and Amazon is different. That's why I put the links on this post to know whether the choice is wise or not.

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=se … =P3B-F+REV+1.04, http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-98-Se … s=Windows+98+SE, http://www.amazon.com/Windows-98-Second-FULL- … s=Windows+98+SE, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CQTYL6/r … =A1H9NMCPZH97BO

Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281272938214

Note: Selecting the components is finished just 2 days ago. Purchasing them is the last step to move on.

don`t go wasting dollars on ebay on overpriced items you know nothing about.

ask friends, family, second hand stores and junkyards for stuff, build something and see if you want upgrades later on.

buy an used p2 or p3 and go from there. get a cheap voodoo1, 2 or 3 and start playing with it, then decide if you want/need a much more expensive voodoo5!

and used old pc`s come with a windows 98se license on the case so you can use that for free and just download an oem iso.......... things get way too expensive in a hurry if you buy every part from ebay.

Sadly, it might be difficult due to the rarity. Even I check the website for second handed products in my country, I cannot find'em at all despite of spending a lot of time on researching include VOGONS's forums 🙁. The only thing I have from scraped PC is ODD and HDD cables. From a modern slate PC, I have PS/2 converter(Mouse), keyboard, LCD monitor, case(neither Lian-Li nor big tower). There are questions below my reply.

Q1: Is Voodoo 3 (instead of 5500) great for playing Diablo 1&2(They are pro Glide games)?
Q2: Can you recommend PSU from Enermax as 500W model (Platimax, etc)?
Q3: How does DVD-ROM with CD audio( in front of it) look like?
Q4: Which Lian-Li's model is suitable for me (as big tower)? Since I prefer aluminium case with its long lasting ability. There are some routes to choose a proper case.
1st route: 1 single IDE HDD(120GB), 3.5 FDD and others.
2nd route: 3 HDDs {1 IDE HDD(Windows 98 SE), 1 SATA HDD (500GB~1TB as storage for LINUX), 1 SSD (for Linux installation)}, others
Q5: Are any modern IDE HDD has CD Audio (Hitatchi, Western Digital as 120GB)? I would like to go Hitachi since it is robust.
Q6: Can you tell me other PCI and ISA soundcards that work well for games such as Blood, Starcraft, Diablo (not only Aureal Vortex)?
Q7: Is SDRAM still availiable in the market?
Q8: Would you please give drivers and files for Intel 440BX chip, Tihiy's taskmgr.exe (It is from RP 9.7 and it can't be downloaded with 404 error), W98 SE autopatcher with official updates?

Note: I like new boxed products since they have more nostalgic features than used things.

Hmm... I see. I might choose Aureal(A3D) or EAX PCI soundcards since my rig is not a dos gaming rig. Moreover, they are cheaper than Gravis, Roland, etc xd. Can you give links for Vortex 2 or santa cruz (bit difficult to find as sealed products with cables, etc). Which Lian-Li's model (big tower or middle tower) fits for me (you can give other models like Delta, Coolermasters as well)? Are there any difference between Voodoo 3 or Voodoo 5 AGP(5500 AGP is hard to search) models? I would like you to give recommended models from Voodoo 3 to Voodoo 5 (exclude Voodoo 4).

Note: Do you have 4102226F.ZIP(HDD limit patch) and Tihiy's taskmgr.exe from Revolutions Pack?
Is installing 440 BX chipset driver necessary? If it is, please give an link for me (little bit confused to find).
Can you give Aureal soundcard drivers to me (extremely hard to search)?
Are IDE HDDs with cd audio still available in the market?

Guys, I found that P3B-F requires slot CPU 1 adaptor since it did not have CPU slot at all (requires slot 1 adaptor). Can you suggest another mainboard that supports Pentium 3-S Tualatin 1.4Ghz (It's okay to give PCI slots only mainboards like TUSL2-C since it is not DOS gaming rig)? Also, I would like you to give links for Pentium 3-S Tualatin CPU (Except: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281238323137)?

CPU: Pentium 3-S Tualatin 1.4GHz pinmodded (You can give another links for that)
Motherboard: (Decided to choose another mainboard because P3B-F does not have CPU slot) (I like to have a board that supprots multi HDD with IDE slots or not)
GPU: Voodoo 5 5500 AGP (Oh wow, the price of this GPU is full of madness!!!)
Hard Drive: Toshiba {(Hitach) It absorbed Hitatch's 3.5 HDD plant long time ago..} 200~300 GB ATA IDE or more
Floppy Drive: Sony MPF920-Z/CU1 Internal 3.5 IDE Floppy Drive ($12.49 with free shipping) (minor wear)
Optical Drive: Sony DDU1615 16x DVD-ROM IDE Drive ($17.46 with free shipping)
Sound Card: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI Sound Card (I'm just go with this sound card since this PC will be 1995~2002 gaming rig)
Case: Lian-Li's ATX case (I want the case that fits my purpose) (I might go with 2~3 HDD, 3.5 floppy, etc or just use with a single HDD)
RAM: Kingston Technologies 512MB DDR SDRAM PC3200 Desktop Memory KVR400AK2/512R (2*256MB SDRAMs) ($7.99+$4.95 shipping)
Speakers: Modern 5.1/7.1 speakers
Monitor: LG's 16:9 LCD monitor
Power Supply: Enermax's Power Supply 500 Watt (Plz tell me suitable class (Gold, Platimax as 500w) for this PC)
Mouse: Modern USB mouse (with PS/2 adapter)
Keyboard: Modern USB keyboard (with PS/2 adapter)
Internet Card: Intel Pro-100+ PCI
Fan: EverCool EC-ND-18 Socket A/ 462/ 370 FC-PGA (2) Aluminum Copper CPU Cooler/Noctua 80mm NF-R8-1800 Premium Gaming Grade Ultra Quiet Case Cooler Cooling Fan ($17.46 with free shipping)

Note:
Again, altough I searched through to find used products in my country as you said (include scrapped areas), I couldn't find suitable one at all...
What's the best partitioning scheme for dual booting Linux and gaming Windows 98 SE Rig as 2 ways {a single hdd, 2~3 HDDs(e.g. C:\ with 60GB, D:\ with 120GB..)}?
Is installing games on other drives other than C:\ works well?
Dual boot choices: If I'm going to use Linux Mint, I will use 200~300 GB HDD for other HDD. Otherwise (Kali Linux), I will use 50GB for others.

The one thing I'll add again is win98se and partition sizes. I have found further in my testing that a 100 GB partition size is too large, and while windows will physically install, it has "bizzare" errors with installing drivers, and ultimately with a partition of that size you won't be able to install drivers for any of your hardware. I have (further in my testing) found out that 20 GB works 100% perfect, and 40 GB works 100% perfect.

Anything between 40GB and 100GB though is unknown and may have issues. You need to remember that the most common hard drive sizes during when Win98 were used, were typically in the 4-10 GB range, so using large hard drives with these older operating systems usually doesn't work well. Your Milage May Vary.

Hmm I see. What about installing Win 98 SE with this tweak? It is a tweak that allows you to install Win 98 SE on large HDD (removes 137GB limit). It says that requires another floppy disk not only booting disket from Windows 98 SE package. How should I do it? Also, I found that P3B-F seemed to be needed slot 1 adaptor for CPU(http://www.ebay.com/itm/281238323137) from manual that made me to choose another mainboard. Can you suggest another board for me (fine with PCI slots only board)?

Partition attempts for single HDD and multi HDD: Cancelled. I might just use used PCs from Ebay. You can find the link in my notes.

Notes:

What about this one? It might be a wise choice to use with this CPU(http://www.ebay.com/itm/281238323137) (Despite of Geforce 4600 TI and PCI slots only) since I'm just play Direct-X games rather than Glide or DOS games.

Links:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEST-WINDOWS-98SE-Gam … =item1c4100d6f0
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121349634563

Can you tell me the direct-x games during 90's to 2005 which Geforce 4600 TI runs extraordinary good?

Is Geforce 4600 TI works well on Diablo 1 (except 2 it screws up when I use non-glide GPUs)?

I tried to search through some Win 98 SE vintage PCs but they were very few. Here's my last plan for Direct-X gaming rig. By the way, is it possible to use HDD (Win 98 SE installed) when I change MOBO (Intel D815EEA into D815EEA2)? I'm deadly serious for getting reply from you guys since I'm changed the whole plan for suitable usage. Also, it is last attempt to construct plan for it.

Final Direct-X gaming rig plan:

CPU: Pentium 3-S Tualatin 1.4GHz pinmodded
MOBO: Intel D815EEA2 (I'm not decided to use P3B-F since it does not make sense for me)
GPU: Geforce 4600 TI AGP with heatsink from used PC
HDD: SEAGATE 80 GB Barracuda 7200 ATA IDE from used PC with multiple HDDs
FDD: From used PC (Plz look at vintage PCs section)
ODD: From used PC
Sound Card: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI Sound Card (will be switched from SB Audigy of used PC)
Case: Used Rosewill's ATX case (might be changed)
RAM: From used PC, 512MB (might be upgraded to 1GB)
Speakers: Modern 5.1/7.1 speakers
Monitor: LG's 16:9 LCD monitor
PSU: Used Rosewill's 350W (might be replaced to Enermax)
Mouse: Modern USB mouse (with PS/2 adapter)
Keyboard: Modern USB keyboard (with PS/2 adapter)
