I think in terms of parts, voices, tones, drumsets and output quality the SC-88ST is the same as the SC-88 (32 parts, 64 voices, 654 tones, 22 drumsets, and 18bit @ 32kHz quality) but I can't recall how missing the front display makes a big difference, but I think I remember reading about it here on Vogons somewhere.

Should be the same yeah, the display is very handy for seeing if there is anything wrong with playback but it's not mandatory for gaming.

what about SC-55 map switching? does the 88ST has a button for it or you have to find a SysEX message?

It has a button for that, but from the SC-88 I know there can be issues when switching back to native map. Should probably not matter for simple GM tracks though.

Any troubles that would not be solved by a off/on reset ?

Nope, I have a hard time telling the SC-55 and SC-88 in 55 map apart in games...
