Trying find and summarize info about Orchid SoundWave 32 series sound cards.

--
There some different version of cards in the internet.
I've got this one: http://kawai.spb.ru/photo/v/hardware/museum/p … e+32_f.JPG.html
This one Board Revision is 835-0139-1/A, ROM's "820-...", no "512/1M jumper, port/dma jumpers from left to right.

Same board with different roms from elianda: http://mail.lipsia.de/~enigma/neu/pics/orchid … SoundWave32.jpg
This one Board Revision is 835-0139-1/A, ROM's "821-...", no "512/1M jumper, port/dma jumpers from left to right.

Another one from RacoonRider: http://www.pcang.com/img/sound_wave32.jpg
This one Board Revision is 835-0139-1/B, ROM's "810-...", has "512/1M" jumper, port/dma jumpers from right to left.

Same from bristlehog: http://geryon.ru/orchid_sw32_512k.jpg

Another revision on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Orchid-SoundWave-32-V … t-/130918583124
This one Board Revision is 835-0139-1/C, ROM's "810-...", has "512/1M" jumper, port/dma jumpers from right to left.

Is all this board SoundWave 32? May be some of the SoundWave 32 Pro? Studio?

--
There a "Isa soundcard overview" topic: Sound cards - from best to worst
They have next Orchid SW32 cards in database (exclude GameWave32 and scsi revision):
---------------------
SoundWave 32 Pro 16Bit ISA, 2MB Maximum Onboard Memory, M-CD
SoundWave 32 plus
SoundWave 32 +Studio 16Bit ISA, ADSP-2115, M-CD, WBH
SoundWave 32 16Bit ISA, Analog Devices, M-CD
---------------------
Difference between revision is not clear. All cards use analog deices (adsp if analog devices chip), all Multi-CD (sony and mitsumi interfaces).
The differences is:
- WBH for "Studio" (but I don't see such photo, may be this is mistake).
- rom size (but is unknown how to determine rom size).

--
Drivers depends from rom version. For standard rom's latest driver is 1.4.
For Innovision rom's latest driver version 2.x.
Drivers for SW32, SW32 Pro, SW32 +InnoVision rom, manuals: http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/Hardware/Diamond/Le … /AUDIO/SWAVE32/

--
How we can identify rom size?
Which rom version contain innovision revision?
Is there somewhere innovision roms dump?

There already two topics about SW32:

Ok, scsi version has a WBH. But I still can't find any board without scsi with WBH.

There is 2 major posibilities:
- "32, 32 pro, 32 studio" is only marketing names, same board with differet bundles
- board revision (1/a, 1/b, 1/c) related to "32, 32 pro, 32 studio" but still unknown how.

A WBH, that is a nice feature.

Yes. But it's possible, that your database contain wrong information about orchid sw32. We can't find any sw32 without scsi with WBH.

WBH= Waveblaster Header (for midi Daughterboard).

I took the info from this table, as stated in the document: http://www.yjfy.com/Hardware/video/ORCHID.htm
Will correct it later. Maybe after you, and other Orchid sound card owners, have gathered more information.

Aren't the InVision ROMs labeled with "B" instead of "A" in the first line of the ROM chips like: 810-0004-2/B ?
I think 810 / 820 / 821.. isn't really important.

I will get one soon, at least I hope so 🤣

It is more or less an educated guess because all of the default Prosonus ROM chips have the "A" suffix and the only InVision ROMs I listened to had not only the "(C) Orchid/INVSN" label on the chips but also a "B" suffix.
May be coincidence but would make sense to me. So maybe A stands for the initial series of ROMS and B for the more advanced InVisions.

Got my SoundWave32 with the "B" suffix ROMs today. Cleaned the contacts, plugged it into the computer, patched the .LD files (for the DSP update) in the SW32 folder et voila:
It sounds totally different from the Pronsonus Roms on my GameWave32 card. I am sure now that 810 / 820 doesn't mean anything regarding the ROM origin and it is the suffix "B" that indicates the InVision ROMs.

Maybe there are some cards with stickers on the ROMs and without "INVSN" Copyright label. I think when these stickers carry the "B" suffix one can be sure that these chips contain the better InVision ROMs.

I'm sorry but I don't have the equipement to dump the chips right now. My breadboard died month ago and I currently have no need to buy a need one. If you have a simple method to read the chips out - let me know.

Test my Orchid sw32 board. Install both, 1.x drivers and 2.x.
Actual drivers different only in two microcode files: genmid.ld and mt32.ld)

Tested my board: Board Revision is 835-0139-1/A, ROM's "820-...", no "512/1M jumper".
With default - sound is more or less adequate.
With InVision - music is complete mess, with noise and laser sound in usual midi.

Digging in to manuals, drivers descriptions and other files, now i can say, that there was 5 version of SW32:
First two use smaller PCB, where "32" has limited rom size, and "32 pro" has ability to install 2mb roms. (no WBH)
From third to fifth use bigger pcb with WBH and scsi controller.
Already shipped with InVision roms (not 100% shure).
Where "32 +Studio" is "32+scsi" bundled with WaveBooster 4FX dautherboard, and "32pro scsi" - "32+scsi" with mt32 emulation replaced with "a/ws" emulation.

table should looks like:

ORCHID ISA SOUNDCARDS
---------------------
SoundWave 32 16Bit ISA, AD1848, ADSP-2115, AD Echo WT, Mitsumi+Sony CD, 1MB max rom (orig), GM+MT32 emu
SoundWave 32 Pro 16Bit ISA, AD1848, ADSP-2115, AD Echo WT, Mitsumi+Sony CD, 2MB max rom (orig), GM+MT32 emu
SoundWave 32+SCSI 16Bit ISA, AD1848, ADSP-2115, AD Echo WT, SCSI+MitsumiCD, WBH, 2MB max rom (invis), GM+MT32 emu
SoundWave 32PRO SCSI 16Bit ISA, AD1848, ADSP-2115, AD Echo WT, SCSI+MitsumiCD, WBH, 2MB max rom (invis), GM+A/WS emu
SoundWave 32 +Studio 16Bit ISA, AD1848, ADSP-2115, AD Echo WT, SCSI+MitsumiCD, WBH, 2MB max rom (invis), GM+MT32 emu + WaveBooster 4FX DB

From InVision drivers:
"INV.EXE contains support software for Orchid audio products that use the InVision wavetable ROM set. Those products are the SoundWave 32+SCSI, and the GameWave 32Plus, which ship with InVision ROMs. It may also include the SoundWave 32 and GameWave 32 if the stock (Prosonus) ROMs have been upgraded to InVision ROMs."
So, "SoundWave 32+SCSI" and "GameWave 32Plus" always shipped with InVision, and "SoundWave 32" and "GameWave 32" can be upgraded.

btw, about "TBS Maui - Dead WBH!".
It's not dead, because it's not WBH, it's "WBH-receiver".
The idea was to connect your exiting sb16 WBH with ribbon cable to Maui, and maui will play midi.
There even option in maui init program - use "midi in" from rear db9 or from internal 26pin header.
In later revision that pins newer soldered.

Messed with SW32. Have some problem.

Got 3 board:
1) SW32 (830-0139-1/A), 2 Orchid old rom chip, no jumper
2) SW32 (830-0139-12/C2), 1 Orchid AWS rom, jumper 1M/512K on "512K"
3) SW32+scsi (830-0149-12/B1), 1 Orchid AWS rom, jumper 1M/2M on "2M", WBH.

All boards work well as SB/WSS and FM.
The only problem is mpu401/GM part.

First board play midi ok with 1.x drivers, and play midi with some wrong instrumments on 2.x drivers (for invision rom).
Second board don't play midi at all.
Third board don't play midi at all, unless I install WB daugherboard on WBH.

I've try to install roms from first board to other - all three board play midi ok, with 1.x drivers. So physically all boards works ok.
i've try to swap rom on 2 and 3 boards, try to change rom size jumper - nothing.

The main target - to run "SW32+scsi" board with internal WT and WB, but if I install old rom - WB dosn't play, and if I install AWS rom - only WB play, no internal synth.
Any ideas?
