Thanks for the help man and the link. I guess when my 3com network card comes I will get to load up some drivers/software and hit up IRC....maybe. haha We will see.

Here's a tutorial on what you'll need to set up TCP/IP using TCP32b in WfW http://win31.yolasite.com/windows-tutorials.php You don't need the Internet suite at all though unless you want to give IE 5.01 a shot. See you at #vc 😉

Tried just for shiggles to install Windows 95 on my Toshiba T5200 portable computer (386DX-20, 8MB RAM, 40MB hard drive). Installer outright refused to run because of how small the hard drive is, but I was able to manually copy a pre-existing install from my 486 via Zip drive, and by selectively deleting extraneous files and running DriveSpace, I was able to actually fit it on there with about 3MB left to spare. Unfortunately it only boots partway then dies with an "Insufficient memory" error, this despite the fact that Win95 is supposed to be able to run on 4MB. Oh well, it was worth a shot. :p

I have successfully booted 95 on a Presario 460 with just the 4 MBs of onboard RAM. Not pretty, but it does run.

The 486 I copied the install from has 16MB, so best I can figure is that it's still expecting there to be 16MB and thus has all it's various settings configured for such, and is running out of memory. Bummer.

UPDATE: Success! I had to resize the DriveSpace volume, but once I did that it booted right up. It's noticeably slow in places, but otherwise it runs surprisingly well. 🤣

Jealous of the bench. It's too tidy though IMHO.

It wasn't before putting it together 😁

Yesterday I tapped the KVM over to UT2K4 and was greeted by a frozen screen. Rebooted to 'bad BIOS checksum', and so my trip down the rabbit-hole began... So after about a day and half I've established I have no working fast AGP boards anymore. P4P8000SE, P4R800-VM, A7N8X Deluxe, and GA-7N400 are all now retired with complaints against them. Ouch

Thought I'd loaded my recently built win98 box correctly, online to find that the drive I'd set to 32GB was actually reading as 4GB. Started back to square one with a trip down memory lane to remember how to install a drive overlay and then re-install '98. Success. Everything back up and running with drivers installed and drive running at a full 80GB.

Even had a chance to play a little Episode 1 Racer.

Assembled an P-166 with 64mb of ram, 4gb SCSI hard drive, SB16 and an S3 from number nine.
Installed MS Dos 6.22 and an ATX psu in this AT machine.
I used my homemade ATX to AT convertercable.

Doing some testing on my main pc config...switching from a Creative TNT 16MB AGP to a G200 to a Riva128 PCI and back to the TNT.
Now something must be gone wrong cause every isa sound cards (AWE64,ESS1868) have sound distortion during games... like conflicts with irq or mem but nothing seems to be shared.

Added a Matrox G450 Millenium 32 mb PCI to my Cyrix/IBM 6x86 MX 333 ECS SiS based system, amazingly both DOOM & QUAKE are faster with the SiS 6326 4mb(not shared RAM) that is built into the board, image quality is about the same tho, that SiS is shockingly good!!! Will add scores to Phil's ultimate VGA benchmark spreadsheet in a bit. Of course the Matrox is far better in direct 3D games but I really thought the G450 would trounce the SiS 6326. But there you are, can't argue with the numbers, on Phils bench SiS got 229.27, Matrox 178.07.

Swapped motherboard in the "green machine".
Now it is running an 440bx from Intel.

Yesterday I beat the AI in Warlords II at the highest difficulty level. What a blast. 😀

I also swapped out my MT-32 and SC-55ST for my CM-500. I am not sure the CM-500 will work very well for old games with MT-32 so I may have to stack my CM-32L with it as well. I will experiment with that later today. 😈

Replaced the thermal paste and cleaned up the coolers on some of my GPU's. My 9800pro had black gooey dust in the heatsink...not sure what the hell was it or what the previous owner did to get that there.

Also not really retro, but I got some cardboard to hold up the video card in my main rig. I actually like how todays cards are really huge and flashy with their big colorful coolers, but I could do without the drooping.

Yesterday, I finally got to try out a long-awaited DOS gaming combo:

Rendition Verite 1000 + Descent 2 (Verite hardware-accelerated edition) + General Midi from quality DB (Dream SAM9733)

An amazing game for the era, especially with 3D video and wavetable synth. I couldn't get the game to work with my Verite 2100, even with the patches. Had to be a V1000.

Bizarro-land. Half my trouble on the weekend turns out to be the Benq FP931 LCD doesn't like Linux on the VGA. Video fails shortly into startup /except/ for the minilinux on an older Hirens. Newer version of that fails like other Linux. This turns out to be consistent for 7600GS, 9600XT, 9600PRO, and the onboard of the P4R800-VM.

DVI from those cards, no problem. Also there's no such VGA trouble for my similar vintage Benq FP222W.

And why it blindsided me so badly: VGA & Linux is completely fine on my ASUS ABAE-LE's onboard, which is of course how I'd been using that LCD just before the troubleshooting session.

Started to build my BeOS machine.
At the moment, it is without software and I need to investigate what type of hardware the OS supports.
Currently, it is running allmost all passive cooled. This is nice, as the 740gfx card has Video-in/video-out.

Changed cooler on my Asus V7700 Deluxe. Wich is a Geforce2-GTS that came with the giant haul I mentioned last monday or tuesday.
The V7700 Deluxe, just seems like a really nice card to me. Video-in and all that.
The original cooler was quite dead, so I just scavanged an FX5200 for it's cooler. Perfect match, and it even got some new paste.

I have been beating my Athlon XP machine to death with a few applications and it is running fine with the XP-M 2400+ so far. It actually feels more responsive despite the slower CPU, perhaps due to the fact it actually has enough power to run. I might be brave and try a faster XP-M soon as I think I have two more that may work installed in dead laptops, at least one of them may be a DTR-class chip though, not an option as those actually use more power than the desktop model.

I will probably be using the system to run ePSXE for a Let's Play on my second YouTube channel soon.

More 8088 love for me today! My memory chips arrived, so now I have an 8900D card again (I had taken its memory chips out to use on my XT-class PC) and full 640KB on it. Unfortunately I can't get colors from the composite output (I had hoped this Pravetz clone card could output colors), but other than that it is working great.
