Slackware 14.2 installed on my AMD k6-2 400 without any bother at all btw. So that is version 4x kernal running on the thing

And just like that, Arch wasn't worth it anymore. My curiosity about "how GNU/Linux/Xorg" works was satisfied.

I am ill so I have some time for retro stuff. Today I made composite mod for ZX Spectrum 48k+ from scrap yard, installed OS8.6 on my beige G3 and then put HDD to fat PS2 a played Rule of the Rose for he first time. What a nice day 🙂

I received a new addition to my collection today - a Dragon 32 computer. Bought as "Untested", but thought I'd have a gamble since the price was better than what most of these sell for lately.

First thing I did was to open it up, disconnect the power connector from the motherboard and then test the output power from the power supply & AC adapter with my multimeter. 0v, it was dead! As I'm in the UK I thought I'd check the fuse in the plug and discovered that the fuse was missing. I replaced the fuse and then I checked the output DC voltages from the motherboard ribbon cable side, all present and correct: 12V, 5V & -5V.

With the correct voltages being output, I reconnected the power supply to the motherboard and powered on the computer. It didn't boot, just displayed an orange screen full of @ symbols.

Luckily I've done some research in advance, as well as experiencing the Dragon/CoCo emulator and this screen usually happens if the ROM isn't present or not working properly. So I removed the socketed ROM chip, sprayed both the chip and the socket with some electric contact cleaner and reinserted the ROM. Turned the computer back on and the Dragon breathes fire once again, booted straight into BASIC!

The computer needs a thorough cleaning, but I've given it a light cleaning for now and have pretty much spent the day loading & playing games from a CASDuino. A few teething issues to look at with the CASDuino, since some games don't appear to want to load, but the majority of stuff has been fine.

Took a case from a friend which originally stored some low end Celeron G530 on a MSI H61 mobo. It's a bit futuristic (even has a Win7 Home Premium COA on the sidepanel!) but it will make a nice case (JNC built so I can swap sidepanels like crazy) for my ASUS P2B based machine.

Nothing low-end about SandyBridge Celeron 😁
I remember running whole RHCE/kvm lab on one of these ... with 16GB of RAM.
Don't give it away. It would make excellent high-end Windows XP system with GTX 750 Ti.

I only took the case, I let him have the board, as I didn't have any need for it (I have a i3 540 which is enough for any "modern" needs, besides my main i5-3470 machine) and also it didn't have RAM. I do have to get a FX-4100 board he found at the trash (and I wish I would be joking) and see what can I do with the CPU (the mobo has some broken traces, but just for the lulz I'll probably power it up and check if it POSTs 🤣)

Tested a few old fashion computer operating systems on my Shuttle Xpc. After that installed a thing with a gui or something called Xwindows, which is really slow. Every time it boot up it displays a line mention "Specter mitigation is successfully loaded" in white lettering. Then comes up this bright red wallpaper with a text box and the words "username" above it. About two inches below that is a couple of sentences in black lettering. The top sentence says Press F1 to select session. The bottom sentence says "For more options: man slim.

I've spent many hours trying to find out who the hell this slim man is. So I don't no what to do next. I've been to that ex-planet Pluto on a seahorse but still can't find the small man fellow :(o sigh. I have a history of network support and reside in Silicon Valley.

Can some one tell the slim man to get hold of me so I can sort this issue out. Thank you most kindly in advance.

slim is the name of manual. It meant you type man slim when you log in and read it.

Yeah, I did few play with linux awhile ago but it takes too much work to get any distributions usable. And too many distributions choices over whelmed me.

Not just this, there are another called Meltdown, and few several others that had to be mitigated with time in bios firmware and half in hardware and software layers at first and eventually roll into "future" processors which is will be in of many reasons these latest computer that Windows 11 requires.

No, there is none in software mitigations. It had to be done in hardware to prevent these.

Skippy is in constant communication with Flipper. Apprnenty CHAOS is now in on the act now. Things are not going to be pretty. Spy and Spy from MAD teamed up with CHAOS a couple of years ago. Postman Pat and Mr Plod have just turned up so I have to go.......

If you has done a bt of reasurch you would know Meltdown, the two of them and Spectre variations pof the same exploit.
