Hello there 😀

I'm trying to make the ultimate pc config to play DOS games.
I have a compaq prolinéa 4/25s
But i know nothing about videos card and i need one.
I'm using the video chip intégrated in the motherboard and i have some lags in 3D games like Fontier élite 2.

What is the most important, ram or chipset ?

what do you think about this one ?

look for a TSENG ET4000. example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/360942787230

They are typically $50-60US, unless you happen to find someone who doesn't know what he has.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Cirrus Logic, Tseng, S3, WD all make good cards for gaming 😀

I did a roundup a while ago:

Nope. I barely managed to sell mine Tseng Labs graphics cards for 20$.
Also Western Digital WD90C31 special will outperform ET4000. ( Re: WDC WD90C31 strange benchmark results )

[Edit]

Also, 80$ shipping? that guy is messed in the head 🤣

It has the same performance as seen by the graph above, no outperforming. The reason the PCBench 640x480 test with its 1.4 FPS is missing because the VESA TSR wasn't loaded under testing so the benchmark could not be run.

Check the link i posted in the previous post ( Re: WDC WD90C31 strange benchmark results )

Any new luck on identifying why this one card is so different from all the others?

It is definitely not over clocking the ISA slot. So it must be its own clock or something like that. I doubt they would make one chip different from the other in the manufacturing process. I only have Tseng Labs Sigma VGA Legend to test it against at the moment, and Sigma performs as any other Tseng Labs ET4000 i tested.

[edit]

It seems to be because of Wait State jumper (i discovered some info on this). The one that out performs uses ZERO Wait States.
Also, they were both using 83Hz refresh rate, i set the jumper to 60Hz.

[Edit]

Yup, with Wait State set to ZERO both cards outperform Tseng Labs ET4000AX.
The performance is the following:

Super Scape (3DBench2) : 43FPS
Player Bench (PCPBench) VESA : 7.7 FPS
Player Bench (PCPBench) VGA : 22.3 FPS

Benchs I did with 16 Bits ISA video cards some times ago :

Intel 486 DX2 66 Mhz WT | 8 MB (SIMM 30) 0 WS | 256 KB WT L2 CACHE (15 NS) 3-2-2-2 0 WS | Generic UMC491F VLB Motherboard

RUNNING ON DOS 6.22 => NO EMM386 | NO HIMEM | NO UNIVBE | DOOM 1.9 DEMO 3 with SB16 music/digital 4 voices

CIRRUS LOGIC GD5422 ISA 512 KB 70 NS => 3dbench2 33.5 fps | pcpbench 9.6 fps | doom 18.1 fps
TSENG LABS ET4000AX ISA 512 KB 80 NS => 3dbench2 33.5 fps | pcpbench 9.6 fps | doom 17.9 fps
OAK OTI077 ISA 1024 KB 70 NS => 3dbench2 27.7 fps | pcpbench 8.9 fps | doom 13.68 fps
TRIDENT TVGA 8900D ISA 1024 KB 70 NS => 3dbench2 29.4 fps | pcpbench 9 fps | doom 11.1 fps
HEADLAND G2 ISA 256 KB 100 NS => 3dbench2 17.4 fps | pcpbench 7.1 fps | doom 11.04 fps
DT 'PARADISE 88 PVGA1A-JK ISA 512 KB 100 NS => 3dbench2 26.2 fps | pcpbench 8.7 fps | doom 10.71 fps
WDC '89 WD90C00-JK ISA 512 KB 120/100 NS => 3dbench2 24.3 fps | pcpbench 8 fps | doom 10.42 fps

Not just "NO" but "Hell NO!" - whatever is onboard will probably be far better than that 8 bit ISA Paradise card.

Memory on the card, in those days, really only determined the maximum resolution / colour depth.

After much looking, it appears the onboard is a 512k Cirrus Logic, can't find the type

Hello, thanks for replies
I looked in my stuff i found this 😊

dsc_0536.jpg
dsc_0537.jpg

It's a tseng lab ET4000AX chipset with 2 MB RAM but i'm not sure of that.

I tested the card, it's OK

According to the graph, it's seem to be a good card.
Someone can confirm ?

The chipset integrated in my motherboard is a tseng labs ET4000 W32
it's a good one ?

ET 4000 W32 is a better choice than ET4000AX.
That card on the image is an 1MB card.

But if it is in his junkbox I think it would be worth using atleast until finding something better

There exist different revisions of the ET4000AX which perform differently. So you you can not generalize your scores.

The card above is an older revision, a newer one is e.g. http://mail.lipsia.de/~enigma/neu/pics/tseng_et4000ax_1.jpg (TC6100AF)

Sure but i have lags in high resolution in frontier elite 2

I'm not sure i can find something better than tseng 4000AX on an ISA card.

yes my pc only accept ISA

I don't understand how can i have lag with an 486dx2-66 CPU and 32M of RAM and tseng ET4000 W32

486DX2-66 benefits already from a local bus video card.

Newer card looks like crap.
But if there really are differences between chips, do you have any 3dbench2 tests? How much revisions are there?
