I got this 386SX board a few months ago. Got it as working but when I tested it, it didn't work. Keyboard BIOS chip was really HOT - it shows on the label as it's wrapped a bit! I stored it as non-working.

Today I picked it up to test it again but upon closer inspection of the motherboard I found out that the Keyboard BIOS chip is inserted in the wrong way 😵 I switched it (and made that long scratch 😒 ), hoped for the best, but it still doesn't work. At power up there are 6 beeps - descriptions is: The keyboard controller IC has failed, which is not allowing Gate A20 to switch the processor to protected mode. Replace the keyboard controller.

So would replacing this chip, which is socketed 😀 , with another one from a 386DX board work (just to test it)? I have only working 386 boards so I don't want to mess around if there is a possibility of breaking them.

Keyboard controllers are generally pretty interchangeable.
