Lots of AGP cards benchmarked on a fast Windows 98 system.

There have been lots of discussion lately about what video card is the best choice for different Windows 9x systems.
There is no correct answer to that question and certainly not one everybody will agree on.

One issue is that its hard to compare the cards. Different members benchmark a few cards each and often get vastly different results with simular hardware.
Its clear that this is not as easy to get consistant results when benching in Windows 9x compared to benching in DOS.

The idea for this thread is simple. I will benchmark ALOT of AGP video cards in the same system with the same settings.
I will make a list or table with all the cards and their potential. I use the word potential because the performance will differ from one system to another.

When I decided on what system to use for this project I first thought of my P3 1400-S Tulalatin@1.6 and my Asus Cusl2 but I dont want to tinker with that system.
What else do I own that is fast enough not to bottleneck the cards and at the same time supports all AGP standards?

In the end I decided to use a socket A board with VIA KT333 chipset togeather with an Athlon XP 2400+ and 512 MB DDR memory.
This system is fast enough not to bottleneck (most of) the cards at the higher resolutions.

When I did choose what benchmarks to include I thought that DX6, DX7 and DX8 and early Open-GL was the stuff to cover.
I will bench the following games and benchmarks.

3dmark 99 MAX
3dmark 2000
3dmark 2001 SE
Quake I
Quake II
Quake III
Unreal Gold

When it comes to the games I will benchmark the following resolutions. 640*480, 800*600, 1024*768 and 1280*X
In Quake I and Quake II X = 960, In Quake III X = 1024 and in Unreal Gold X = 768.

Here is a short presentation of the test system with some images.

I will summarize my findings in the next post but every card will also get their own post.
The plan is that I will benchmark a few cards every week until I am done or gets sidetracked.

Now i wonder what the temperature on a fanless Geforce 3 would be, not to mention OC temps!
I remember trying to attach a big cpu cooler once without fan on a Asus Geforce 3 and the damn thing would get so hot that it looked that it would die at any given moment if i kept it like that.

I really like these benchies, keep them coming!

My 2001 gaming beast in all it's "Pentium 4 Williamate" Glory!

I mounted a low rpm chassi fan 10 cm (~4 inches) from the cards to simulate some airflow in a ventilated chassi.
I have benched a few cards already I just need to sort through the images... With luck I will manage to post results for 2 or 3 more cards today.

Insane FPS!

I guess a 1600 x 1200 resolution would have been nice to give these cards at least a little bit of a challenge 😀

And if you have Excel, PowerPoint or something similar you could make a nice chart out of all your data!

I do test some of the cards at 1280*1024 aswell but because lots of the slower cards wont handle 1280 I limit the results here to 640 and 1024. If a card gets 200+ FPS at 1024 its safe to say that it will handle 1600*1200 as long as it has enough memory.

3dmark 2001 is CPU limited. I would get those numbers if I could run the memory at 333 MHz but my motherboard dosnt recognize the CPU so I am limited to 266 MHz. I do expect to get ~13000 points with the FX 5900 though but we will see when I get there. If you run Windows XP that will increase the scores somewhat.

The vast differences in performance when comparing more or less identical systems is the main reason for this little project.

1600 x 1200 is 2.4x the pixels of 1024 x 768. Maybe test the cards that can handle this resolution and the lower cards as high as they can go. 16 MB of memory should be enough.

My high res CRTs is buisy doing other stuff but I can add 1280 scores to get a better picture of the scaling. I can add 800*600 aswell.
My self I never use higher res than 1280*1024 in DX6 - DX8 games in Windows 98, I cant really see the point. If people use 1920*1200 LCDs it makes sense to use 1600*1200 I guess.

I was using a Mitsubishi 21" CRT from the late 80s back in the day, it was really sharp at 1024*768 @ 75 Hz and it maxed out at 1280*1024 @ 67 Hz.

I will probably only add one card today but I will see if I can find the time to add the missing 800*600 and 1280*X scores for the cards already posted.

Interesting, I've wondered about the gaming performance difference between the 980XGL and the Ti4600.
There was basically no difference at all in 3DMark 2000 and 2001. In Q3 1280x1024x32 the 980XGL falls closer to the Ti4200 score, but the scores are so high it might not mean much between them. 186fps Ti4600, 171.4fps 90XGL, 165.6fps Ti4200. They're very close.

The 980 XGL has 10 MHz slower memory and 3 MHz slower core clock compared to this ti 4600.
This does explain some of the difference.

Two more cards incoming, $1 cards this time.
I thought Geforce4 MX would struggle at higher resolutions but they did mostly fine.
Geforce4 MX needs 128 bit memory and some overclocking to reach its potential.

I can offer a Geforce MX420 if you need one.

I think I already have one of those somewhere, I just need to find it. 😀

I will update with the FX 5900 Ultra and the Geforce 2 MX 400 soon, they are already benched.
TNT2, TNT2 M64 and Riva 128 are also incoming. My TNT card was showing artifacts when I tried it last time but perhaps it works in this system.
A vanilla Geforce 3 and trying the FX 5600 Ultra with another driver is also on the list. And with a newer driver the GF 6200 and 6800 GT should work, or at least the 6800 GT.
