I can run Unreal with my Skywell Magic 3D Plus at 800x600. However for playability it is better to use 640x480 and get the ~20% additional performance from the additional texture RAM.

OK, I do not mind the low playability at 800x600 I just want to make it run on that resolition. So your Skywell Magic 3D Plus is divided into 4MB frame buffer and 4MB texture memory, right?

Yes.
It is this card:

If you really want to do build the ultimate combo (thought about doing something like this too, but I don't have a Voodoo1 yet, just a Voodoo2) you might want to use a 4MB Voodoo1. Although the cards with more RAM may seem cool and can possibly work faster and/or enable higher resolutions, compatibility may suffer. AFAIK the reason is that textures may not cross a 2MB boundary on Voodoo1 or Voodoo2. When you only have 2MB texture memory this is not an issue, and because of this programmers didn't always consider this in early games.
Maybe this can be worked around by setting SST_TMUMEM_SIZE but I don't know if all early games (especially the statically linked ones) respect that variable.

(Don't have a game as an example, sorry.)
