Hi!
I have a FIC VA-503+ and I want to install my SB awe32 , windows98 recognizes it, but I cannot fully install it. I hear wave sound, but emu8000 is not runing I have an exclamation mark on wave synth , I tried everything to make it work. I changed the irq in bios but It's just the same. I also tried other boards, orchid nusound , other cmi soundcards, all with the same result.
Can anyone please give me a hint how can I fix this?
The funny thing is that I can play mids with xr385 daughtercard. Not with emu8000 🙁
Thanks in advance.

Why is there an exclamation mark? Do you see resource conflicts in Resource tab?

there are no conflicts anywhere ... It just doesn't work. If this happened just with SB Awe32, I would say it was its fault , but this happeens with all cards, none of them plays mids with internal hardware. I took care, when installing drivers.

What other devices, either cards, or on-board, are in the system? Disable unneeded devices in BIOS. Make sure BIOS has PnP enabled and to configure automatically. Try changing resources in Windows manually.

Have you checked midi playback in sounds in the control panel and tested by using a game like doom?

It can't be like 'just doesn't work'. There is always a reason behind the exclamation mark, be it a resource conflict, or misfit drivers, or hardware problem.

Take screenshots or screen photos from General, Driver and Resource tabs of your device with exclamation mark, and post here so we can examine.

Also, run MSINFO32 from command prompt, click File->Export and save the report as text file. Give us the text file to examine hardware resources of your problem PC.

Wow.... There is a lot of conflicts.
The gfx card should not be using IRQ 5 at all.
Try a last shot at resource solving, by resetting configuration data in the bios.
IRQ 5 and 7 should always be free for ISA sound cards.
Unless you are using serial and parallel ports too.
GFX should be preferable IRQ 10 or 11.

Although I don't see your device screenshots, there's enough info to assume that your card is set to use resources that it probably won't support.

Standard settings for AWE32 are:

PCM I/O: 220
IRQ: 5
Low DMA: 1
High DMA: 5
MPU I/O: 330
EMU8000 I/O: 620

That corresponds to this BLASTER variable setting: SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6. Your card is set to weird parameters: A260 I10 D3 H7 P300 E660 T6 for no known reasons, because A220, D1, P330 and E620 are free according to MSINFO32 data.

I suggest two possible ways of solving that:

1) Look in your Control Panel -> Multimedia for devices (Sound and MIDI) that are no longer used. Sound devices that have Win 3.1 drivers are not listed in Device Manager, but instead in Multimedia -> Devices. If there are suspicious devices, delete them and reboot.

2) This step only makes sense if your AWE32 is non-PnP like CT2760 or CT3900. Set IRQ5 in your BIOS to Legacy ISA mode so that PnP devices like your video card etc. are tuned to use another IRQs.

Anyway, is your AWE32 PnP or non-PnP?

Your AWE32 Resource pane shows that the EMU8000 is set to 620h I/O, while MSINFO32 shows 660h. You can try manual configuration instead of automatic and see what comes out.

Resource conflicts. You really need to follow all the advices you have got from people.
As it looks like the hardware is working and not broken. You will get it to work.

Well I changed that.
I have no conflits now. Just error 24(0x18).
What drivers should I install?
If that doesn't help i will have to get another machine to test 🙁

Try the SB-AWE compilation found on Vogons drivers collection.
That one works most of the time. 😀
