I have an M537 and could run a K6-2 on it, with lowest "stock" voltage on the board of 2.5V, didn't try for undocumented or modded voltage... but in that config, it wouldn't go much over 350 without the voltage regulators getting "scary" hot. It might end up running a K6-III 350 I have booting around, or I might desingnate it a cyrix board.

I agree with bashing a brand that had the nerve to install fake cache chips as much as the next person, [snip]

Also, Intel had the nerve to forget some L2 cache in the first gen Celerons. 😁

Back probably in 1998 the parents of a friend had just bought him a new computer with a Celeron 300A and Voodoo II.
I was pretty jealous of it at the time. But he didn't overclock it.
I saved up during that year and upgraded my AMD 5x86 133 to a K6-2 300, HOT-591P and Intel 740. Good times, but it couldn't catch the Voodoo.

Heh, just struck me they sound like AM radio stations... HOT-591 is probably the pop charts station and Intel-740 the news channel 🤣

I wouldn't call it an issue... come to think of it, we very likely wouldn't have been able to get them to the crazy speeds we all know (300A doing 450 and beyond, anyone? 😀 ) if it weren't for the missing L2 cache.

300A is of the second generation tho.
With a nice 128kB full speed L2 cache integrated in the core.
First gen only had L1, and were very disappointing =)

But turns out, there is exactly one Socket A board out there in baby AT...

Really? What's the model name of this mythical board? That PC Chips board in your post certainly isn't socket a.

Nope, the infamous M537 is merely my PCChips mistake of choice. It's a VIA VP based early S7 board.

What Repo Man11 kindly linked to - that's also the one I remember. Rather obscure, stupid brand, but it does exist. 😉

Celeron Covington (300 without A) was called Deceleron. Celeron Mendocino (300A) was very famous and was widely overclocked to 450 MHz in boards with Intel BX chipsets - and with its full speed L2 cache beating the contemporary king of the hill Deschutes Pentium II with also 450 MHz.

Hej, AMD systems with an Intel graphics are very rare.

Keeping the internals cool could be quite the challenge though, especially if one intends to use one of these boards in one of those mini AT towers 😋

Yes! All you have to do is buy endless amounts of old computer hardware.

Been there, done that (still doing it) and going to buy the t-shirt once someone starts selling them . 😉

P.S. Christopher Walken is a living legend, IMHO . Long live Colonel Angus!
