The K6-3 @400 is best paired with a Voodoo Banshee, a Voodoo 3 or a Geforce 2 MX 400 combined with a single Voodoo 2. If you find a K6-3+ and manage to run it at 6x100 then a full Geforce 2, Geforce 4 MX or even a Geforce 3 ti 200 makes sense.

Totally agree. A Savage 2000 is most useful for some Unreal Engine games (fastest option for S3 MeTaL API) so I would pair it with a Coppermine at least.

Here is my progress on this build so far. AGP slot: PA256MX Aopen Geforce 2 MX 32mb card. Covered in soot from a fire in the 90's apparently. Slots 2 & 3: 12mb Voodoo 2's in SLI. Slot 4: Diamond Monster MX300 for 9x games Slot 5: Onboard mouse ps/2, infrared and USB. Slot 6: 3com Etherlink 3. Slot 7: SB 16 CT2910 any thoughts or criticisms are welcome of course! 😊

From falconfly:

AGP voltage regulator notes: There is a problem with the combination of older motherboards and newer AGP graphic cards. This is due to the fact that some of the early AGP motherboards used a linear regulator to control the power supply to the AGP slot. Linear regulators can supply at most 2.5A of current, while the switching regulator used on newer motherboards can supply up to 6A at 3.3V. When these motherboards with linear regulators were produced, the average consumption of a graphics card was 1 to 2A, making a supply of 2.5A more than sufficient. Since then, graphic cards have developed and currently the average consumption is between 4 and 5A. This is no problem for motherboards using a switching regulator, but older boards with a linear regulator may run into issues such as overheating, burnouts, and lockups.

So try to find out what type of regulator is on that board. If it's a late revision board it should be fine i think.

Safe cards for the older linear regulators should be: Geforce2 MX, MatroxG200, TNT1/TNT2 M64, Voodoo Banshee. Voodoo3 3000 will be too much, don't know about the 2000 but i wouldn't risk it.
Banshee is a perfect match for a fast k6-2 anyway, v3 comes to life with p3.

In my experience Nvidia cards are a hit and miss on ss7 boards when it comes to stability. I have a GTS in my asus p5b but a gf2Ti or MX will not run stable. So matrox and 3dfx are your best choices.

If you want absolute trouble-free operation and take no chances with voltage regulators: Use a PCI card.

Thank you for the information, my motherboard is a revision 3.0 so I am more reassured now that it COULD handle higher amperage cards. With the 400mhz cpu a bottleneck anyway I am just going to use a low power card in it just to be safe.

Looks like a good build there. Nice to see something put nicely together.
One thing that really puzzles me, is still that choice of dual sound card's
It's not this machine... It's only that people are doing it.

Oh well... Might just be me.

Back to topic. Great build. Good work.

My understanding is that the Aureal Vortex 2 has poor support for DOS so I figured that the SB16 could cover DOS games while the Diamond would be used in 9x games.Fun fact! The only parts I bought for this build were the motherboard, case, and the ISA 3com card. Everything else was free

Niceness... Free stuff is always welcoming.
