Hi! I'm trying to do pretty much the same thing, but struggling. I have a P5KPL-AM/PS motherboard with an nVidia Geforce 7100 GS. For reference, this is the model I have: https://www.mercadopc.com/logic/servlet/item?iditem=196935.
RAM is 2 Gb, but I've used MaxFileCache=512000 and MaxPhysPage=30000 in system.ini, so that Windows detects around 700 Mb RAM. I installed Win98 SE normally, then used the unofficial nVidia 82.69 driver pack (NV8269.zip).

The GFX card gets autodetected but is extremely unstable and constantly gives the "The display adapter is not working/conflicts, etc. ... " sort of error. So in one boot I'm able to change the resolution to 16 bit with 640x480 res, but as soon as I try to change it to 32 bit with 1024x768 res, the PC flat out freezes. Next boot, it gives the above error and Win98 gets stuck after the username/password screen.

Since you've done this successfully @Kamerat, any pointers on another method to get 7100 GS working? From what I see, you used some official nVidia driver and it somehow worked for 7800 GTX. But how do I know which nVidia driver to use for my 7100 GS? And of course the autodetection won't happen, so how do I force the system to detect it?

You can try out RLoew's PatchMEM for Windows to behave better with larger amounts of RAM: http://vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=1814

The BurnMem utility is also an option. Added it as an attachment as old-dos.ru that hosted the file seems to be down.

Thank you so much! I tried patchmem as you said, and now all the instability is gone. The only remaining issue now is: I installed DX9 and ran 3Dmark01 SE on my PC with 7100 GS. It only gives around 6.6K score.

I would've expected a higher score because it's a later generation card, that too with PCIe. I tried both the 6800 GT driver under the Forceware 81.98 package, as well as the unofficial tweaked 82.69 nvidia's 7100 GS driver. Under both the drivers the 3Dmark01 score was 6.6k only. Any idea what I could be missing? (and thanks again for the patchmem tip)

Your 7100 GS should be comparable to my entry for the "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM) (NV44) 256MB 64bit DDR2". Your number is about 85,5% of my result but CPU speed and system memory bandwidth/latency can also contribute to this lower number.

I see.. so with 7100 GS, at a maximum, I can get around 8000 3dmark 2001 score. With AGP GeForce 5200 FX I was getting around 6.5k or so. And 5200 FX is generally regarded as subpar. So I guess 7100 GS is not a very good card either. I'll see if I can find a GF 7600 or higher.

Will a 6600 without any suffix work? I just found one in the wild and hope to grab it for usage with my P4 build.

I don't think that would be a problem, still uses the same NV43 GPU.

Got the ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCIe working with an external monitor on an Asus A6000 series laptop (Pentium M 740, 512MB DDR2) using modified drivers scoring 15262 in 3DMark2001.

How did you modify the driver? I have x600 mobility radeon with rv380 core and want also run it on windows 98. I have successfully installed x300 mobility in other laptop because the drivers were in catalyst 6.2. There are also for x600 but for the desktop version. Did your x700 work only with external monitor, or also with the built in display ? Any help will be appreciated.

You can add the PCI ID of the card to the drivers INF file or just force installation.

I don't remember the details from when I tested the X700, but I think it only worked with an external monitor.
