Going for that authentic feel for a proper 486 I want a really slow CD-ROM drive instead of a modern unit.

Ideally I want a 2x unit. Something that has a 2x print on it would be great.

I have a modern DVD/CD drive now that works with the motherboard. Are there any 2x ATAPI drives that I can connect directly to the motherboard in a functional state? I'd rather avoid having to deal with connecting it through the sound card.

2X ATAPI drives are rare, but apparently a few examples do exist. If I were you I'd go SCSI.
