It's benchmarking time!

Been plotting on this project for quite some time.

The goal is to benchmark a wide range of graphics cards under Windows 98 SE. I will use various systems / processors, but start at the high end with a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 computer.

http://www.philscomputerlab.com/p4-306---w98- … benchmarks.html

System used:
Asus P4S533-VM motherboard with Universal AGP (AGP 1x, 2x and 4x supporting 3.3V as well as 1.5V cards)
512 MB DDR400
Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz Nortwood core, 512 KB Cache, 533 MHz FSB
Western Digital Raptor WD740 74.3 GB 10000 RPM SATA HDD with SATA to IDE adapter
80 GB Western Digital HDD with SATA to IDE adapter (for taking HDD images of the main drive)
Seagate DiscWizard (OEM version of Acronis for taking HDD images of the main drive)
Diamond Monster Sound MX300 (Aureal Vortex2 A3D chip)
Windows 98 SE
DirectX 8.1

Drivers used:
1.07.00-WHQL (Voodoo 3)
1.04.00 (Voodoo 4 and 5)
Matrox PowerDesk for Windows 95/98/Me 6.23.005 (All Matrox cards)
Detonator 12.90 (TNT2 range)

Tools used:
Nvidia Coolbits (Installs v-sync controls and overclocking)
3dfx overclock (Installs v-sync controls and overclocking)
PowerStrip (Access v-sync controls with Matrox cards)

Benchmarks used:
3DMark99
3DMark2000
3DMark2001SE
Earth 2150
Expendable
Drakan
Quake II
Quake III Arena
MDK 2

Resolutions and colour depths:
640x480x16
1024x768x16
1024x768x32
1280x1024x32 or 1280x960x32
1600x1200x32

The AGP cards:
3dfx Velocity 100
3dfx Voodoo3 2000
3dfx Voodoo3 3000
3dfx Voodoo3 3500
3dfx Voodoo4 4500
3dfx Voodoo5 5500
Matrox G400
Matrox G400 MAX
Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64 125 MHz core, 143 MHz memory (64 bit interface)
Nvidia Riva TNT2 125 MHz core, 150 MHz memory
Nvidia Riva TNT2 Pro 143 MHz core, 166 MHz memory
Nvidia Riva TNT2 Ultra 150 MHz core, 183 MHz memory

So I re-started this project again 😀

I just had way too many benchmarks and it became a chore and not retro fun :tired:

So I threw out a few tests and it's now much easier to manage. I also did new charts, learnt a few Excel things on the way and we are back in business.

I can now add everything in a sheet and produce whatever charts I'm after.

Here the first fruit of my labour, a few 16 bit benchmarks of popular Windows 98 retro gaming graphics cards!

Info about the test bench machine and so on can be found here: http://www.philscomputerlab.com/p4-306---w98- … benchmarks.html

The 32 bit charts have more resolutions up to 1600 x 1200.

I'll check this out when I get home.

Interestingly my Gigabyte TNT2 Pro runs at 176/176, see if there is a "Turbo" jumper on it Phil?

Atari 2600, TI994a, Vic20, c64, ZX Spectrum 128, Amstrad CPC464, Atari 65XE, Commodore Plus/4, Amiga 500
PC's from XT 8088, 486, Pentium MMX, K6, Athlon, P3, P4, 775, to current Ryzen 5600x.

There are cards that are factory overclocked. For example the Dynamite TNT2 Ultra with 175 MHz core clock and 200 MHz memory. Or the Falcon Northwest Special Edition Maxi Gamer Xentor 32 SE with 195 MHz core and 235 MHz RAM!

Here the TNT2 cards I have. I got two TNT2 Pro cards, one from MSI, the other one from Elsa. The standard TNT2 is from Diamond, the Viper V770.

Also, what's next? Starting benchmarking the TNT2 M64 😀

I have a regular TNT underway. The German eBay seller sent me a Elsa Victory II Voodoo Banshee by mistake, he was very understanding, I get to keep the card and the TNT is for free 😀

Great projekt, but please add a much lower cpu/board comparison. e.g. PIII/500 or PII/300.
This should be interesting how the scaling between P4/3000 and PIII/500 or PII/300 is.

Retro-Gamer 😀 ...on different machines

That is the plan!

But it will take some time 😀

OMG.....That will be A LOT of benchmarking! I hope you'll get old enough to finish it 🤣

I did it with only 2 benchmarks on 3 platforms (5 cpu speeds in total) and only 2 resolutions and 22 cards....it is a lot of work. Amazed how you always get yourself to this big projects and actually finish them as well.

Great effort as always, very appreciated!

Thanks 😀

It's something I can do on the side. With the V2 SLI project, which ended up as a 60+ page PDF paper, I tried to get it all done, then publish the data. So I was very busy and it was more of a chore than fun. So this time it's a journey, that doesn't have an end, could offer surprises, but let's me enjoy it more and not stress over it. And it's something others can follow too 😀

When compete this will essentially be the definitive benchmark of all time. Nice idea!

That would be cool. My time on planet earth is limited, how cool would it be if some of my stuff lives on 😀

TNT2 M64 benchmarked and charts have been updated: http://www.philscomputerlab.com/pentium-4-306 … benchmarks.html

Quite slow card, almost half the speed compared to TNT2 Ultra. The hard part is avoiding getting a M64 when shopping for a TNT2 😀

Cool project. Hopefully those graphs are somewhat automated!

I'd love to see a Voodoo 4 4500 in there at some stage 😀

All manual, but the computer I enter data into is right next to the benchmark setup. It works quite well 😀

V4 will most certainly get benchmarked, that's a given.
