Hello guys, I recently rescued and restored this little guy and frankly the SIS graphics in it leave much to be desired. I want it to at least pull par with my Compaq 7360 which has VIA chipset. I want both to be able to run games like Driver which the Compaq does flawlessly but the IBM cannot even though it has the same amount of RAM and the same processor. So what I'm looking for is a recommendation for a good PCI gfx card that will do at least that.

This computer has 3 PCI slots and one ISA slot.

IMHO you could either pair the onboard card with a Voodoo2, get a PCI Voodoo3 or just get something like a PCI GeForce4 MX of FX 5200. Even something like a PCI S3 Savage4 or late Matrox would be fine.

Voodoo 3 PCI. The 3000 model will be harder to find than the 2000, but some 2000 models come with SGRAM and can be overclocked to 3000 levels (166 MHz).

I am running a K6-3+ 550 as my daily driver, and Glide really helps to make up for the FPU shortcomings of the AMD CPU.

This looks very similar to my PC300GL. I really need to get around to posting pics in that thread.

radeon 7000 . I have one in an old packard bell ledgend. Give the option of vga , s-video , and dvi. it's 64mb , and is capable of multiple monitors. One of the best pci cards that runs on very old versions of standard pci.

This. I just got one for my 300GL, and it flies in comparison to the old Rage XL it did have. Mine is the 32MB variant without DVI.

I actually had a PC 300GL before, they are neat machines, kinda big though. 🤣

Here's of when I dragged mine home:

see if you can find a Geforce 8600GT PCI should do nicely or get a new HD5450 PCI

These cards require Windows 2000/XP and are definately not as compatible with older games as something like a Geforce FX or a pre-HD radeon.

I would use eighter a GF2, GF3 GF4 or Voodoo3. All PCI.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.

I use a Radeon 7000 PCI in a K6-2, runs well.

Beware of GeForce 2 PCI Cards, many have 32bit Memory Bus (and GF4 MX4000)
That make them slower then TNT2 PCI Cards (Elsa Synergy II for example which has 128Bit RAM).

Example for a Bad GeForce 2 PCI Card:
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/791/geforce2-mx-pci.html

A better one with 128Bit SDRam Memory:
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/928/geforce2 … pro-tv-pci.html

Radeon Cards for PCI Bus are avaible too in crippled Versions also with 32bit Memory Bus.

I would look for a 256Mb GeForce FX5500 they avaible in PCI and have Full Memory Bus (128Mb Versions only have 64bits)

A good, cheap option would be the Nvidia Quadro4 100NVS:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-NVidia-Quadro4-100 … 1-/311477501345

It's on par with the GeForce4 MX440 SE. Pros are VGA/DVI/S-Video output, super low power consumption (~10 W), fanless cooling, and rock-solid Windows 98 driver support (Forceware 45.23 is good). I have one of these in my Gateway G6-350 with a Pentium II 450, and the machine is 100% CPU limited. No reason to exceed this level of power in such an old rig.

I plan to do a full review of this card at some point. Would be interesting to benchmark against AGP GeForce 4s.
