There's a PS/2 mouse enable/disable jumper "JP7" above the top VLB slot and by the keyboard controller near the front, bottom pins of a three jumper block. 1-2 enable, 2-3 disable.

During that times, there was no PS/2 motherboard pinout standards, so many motherboard manufacturers were supplying their own unique PS/2 back plates. You need to check that back plate plug and motherboard connector has compatible/same pinouts.

Just to give you some idea:

soyo2.gif

Unfortunately, the only manual I can find for your mobo, shows no details about the PS/2 mouse connector, other than that it is a PS/2 mouse connector. I have two motherboards with PS/2 connectors on back plates, and in both cases, I need to change the back plate connector and re arrange the cable leads according to mobo manuals. These guys might be an easy place to obtain suitable connectors:

ok i checked my jp7 settings.. theres a cluster of 3 jumpers there.. the top + bottom ones are set to 1+2 and hte middle one is set to pins 2+3 (the manual says not to change it) so according to the manual the ps2 mouse is enabled.. at least according to the jumper setting.. next to it - it says irq12.. maybe i have something stealing irq12?

to tayyare:
the ps/2 header on my motherboard isnt in a single line like that.. its a 2x5 configuration

heres a pic (not of the exact board i have, but a similar board with similar 2x5 ps2 header)
file.php?id=19295&mode=view

im booting win98 off a cf card and everytime its "windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer.
id really like to start using this 486.. this is the only obstacle in the way of me enjoying And setting this computer up with a new os + programs installed

Before suspecting software issues you need to be sure your PS/2's backplate connector matches the pinout of the header on your motherboard. Since this motherboard came with the header soldered on, I REALLY doubt it came with a BIOS that doesn't support it.

wow im an idiot.. ok the pinout of the adapter i have is 2x5...
the actual pin of the header.. as shown by your document u just posted is actualyl 2x4!!!!!!
i bought the wrong stupid ps/2 header.. Model: PLATE6F from startech.com http://www.startech.com/ca/Cables/Serial-Para … Bracket~PLATE6F .. wrong one for this motherboard;(

does anyone know how i could change the pins inside the header connector? because it will obv fit on with 2 pins hanging off to the side. if i could only rearrange the pins in the connector.. but i dont know how this thing works.. do i need a special kind of tool to eject the pin connector/wire into the black pin header?

i cant believe this is the reason.. 🤣 i feel so stupid.
ive already waited for weeks to get this stupid thing

You can usually mod those connectors if they're approximately the right pitch, by carefully extracting the wires and moving them around. The one I currently use is a 1x6 that I've cut up good. 🤣

im not so good with things like that ill just end up braeking it
unless theres a way to just pop out the pin connections and relocate them and snap them back in

looks like i bought the wrong type
anyone know a good company i can order the right part from?

They wires come out cleanly, just need to lift the tiny lip with a small screwdriver, the tip of an exacto knife or something. The careful part is in not breaking the lip on any pins you still need to hold a wire in later.

You can use a very small screwdriver to lift the plastic tabs near the end of the connector and, with the tab lifted, pull the connector. I've done it more than once, with no special tools, you just need a somewhat steady hand and patience.

ok i found this previous vogons post: PS/2 Bracket for Asus Motherboard Header
and following the instruction i used a screwdrivr to pullback the plastic tabs to be able to remove the wire/pins from the sockets and re-arrange them
but unfortunaetly i must have made a mistake because im still getting the no ps2 mouse screen 🙁

from top to bottom,
left to right
i arranged the pins like so:

yellow | x
x | x
brown | x
red | green

yea well nothing is working.. maybe i should try changing the jp7 jumper even tho from what i can tell it looks to be enabled already
the yellow wire is the voltage right? pretty sure i have that in the right location on pin 4 (top left)

question is.. which color is ground? data? click?
like i said i have yellow + red,green,brown wires
