If you get Roland SD-80 expecting an upgraded Sound Canvas, like an SC-88 Pro with a 44.1 kHz signal path, you will be quite disappointed.
The backward compatibility is no good, and it means MIDI composed for SC-88 will have different balance, missing effects, or will just sound bad.

Very nice breakdown of SD-80 here: https://chrisoft.org/blog/post/2019-04-25.html

Nah, not in the context of Vogons. It is cool if you are into DTM (desktop MIDI gear) in general and would like to compose new music with a high-quality GM/GS synth, but not so useful for breathing new life into old games or standard MIDI files.

But as I already discovered, DTM with highest DAC > 16 bit and more notes per instrument sound better then older units. For example Roland SC-55 and Roland SC-D70 or SC-88Pro. I have Yamaha MU-2000EX and the same MiDI file will play better without XG. For my self I try to find most compatible and easy to use DTM. I have a lot of them, but a not saw much time to play with zło of them
