I dont have any experience with pentium 4 socket 423 systems... But what i know is that the most Pentium III tualatin`s are faster, because of a shorter pipeline..
If you want to go with pentium 4.. At least go with s478..

last year i had the opportunity to take home an Intel D850GB + Pentium 4 1.4Ghz + 2 x 64MB Rimm for free. Since i dont like to pay for parts to build my retro computers i realized that buying big Rimms was going to be expensive (Socket 423 was very rare in Argentina from the beginning) so i trashed all that stuff. Also there is no love in me for Willamette, it was always a piece of shit.

yep, come at me one at a time

$23.95 with free ship so one doesn't have to burn nearly $40 to get one.

I have a mini hoard of RDRAM, including a matching pair of 600mhz 512's. Mostly 256 and 128's. I do not think there are any 64mb pieces.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Yeah I've had that one on my watch list for a while, but I really don't think it's worth the extra 0.2GHz for that money... I got my 1.8GHz for $4. 😀

Plus, considering that I got my socket 423 motherboard specifically because it had a SB-link header, so it's compatible with DOS games - the speed adjustments I'm looking for are down, not up.

Cool, grabbed some odd ball pcchips 423 board that is safe to use with older cards like 3dfx and riva tnt ect. (VIA Apollo P4X266)

I like doing strange builds 😀

Now I'm also build S-423 system. I have Asus P4T, P4-2.0Ghz and today got pair sticks of PC1066 RDRAM memory (Samsung MR18R1628EG0-CT9Q1). But after power on, I have see error code "30" Award. After clear cmos I see "00" and hear long beep, which sad about problem with memory subsystem. Does anybody use S423 motherboard and PC1066 memory?

AFAIK the i850 chipset only supports PC600 and PC800 RDRAM.

Yes, officially PC800, but for example on VIA KT266A witch support PC2100 DDR Memory I can use PC3200 or even faster. Think why not I can do with i850 ?

Because anything that is out of specifications is not guaranteed.

My Asus P4T-M has Problems running 1,5Gb RD-Ram with some AGP Cards, intressenting is it works just fine with less RAM.
Mostly GeForce 6xxx Series and some FX Cards.

Do you have similar issues with the early Intel Chipset ?

I haven't tried my Socket 423 with older FX cards, i only have a bunch of FX 5200s, FX 5500s and my 6200 AGP

I never tried PC1066 on the plain 850 since i only have PC800-45 RAM, i have also an Intel D850EMV2 which is Socket 478, but uses the newer Intel 850E, i don't know about if PC1066 is backwards compatible. DDR and SDRAM is backwards compatible with lower sppeds, you can run DDR400 on a DDR266 motherboard, but the DDR400 will only run at DDR266 speeds

I have only 2x 128Mb PC800 and 2x256Mb PC1066, so can't think anything about 1.5Gb problems.

If somebody have PC1066 ram it will be interesting to know how PC1066 works with another motherboards.

So I decided to use jumper switches, and memory runs! So to use PC1066 on S423 is possible.

Although I do own one 423 system, for me this platform doesn't really serve any practical purpose. There's nothing you can't do with a PIII (aiming on the low end) or a 478 (aiming on the higher end). OK apart from actually owning and playing around with the hardware and RDRAM. Their flexibility can't be unseen though, if something doesn't work out well they can always be used as heaters 😀

I wonder if anyone has tried voltage tweaking 423s to reduce power consumption since Intel always over volts their procs a bit. I did it to a Q8200 and still managed 3.2ghz on less than stock volts using a xfx 780i with the pencil mod. Also I noticed that it is possible to mount a zalman cnps7000 using the existing mounting holes and the portion of the kit meant for through hole socket a despite only using two screws instead of four.

TBH in my 423 system it's not the CPU that is a big heat problem, it's the RAM. 😀
