$50 for a Gigabyte GA486 AM/S v2.21 is a fair price. If the seller was US- or Europe-based, I would be concerned there was something wrong with the board.

You have read wrong 😉

It's GA-486VM board, like this one:

I was commenting on my own board recommendations and ebay prices, not what the poster ended up with.

Didn't take long to sell that board! Where's my commission? Anyone here nab it?

Got it all up and running nicely. Pictures http://imgur.com/a/WLfPj

Gigabyte GA-486VM AT board with a 66MHz 486 DX2 66 processor.

16mb RAM! Unfortunately the BIOS has a 504MB limit but I found a way of circumventing it. Those long cards are two VLB (VESA Local Bus) cards. One is a video card and another is a multi I/O card that acts as the IDE controller and has the serial + parallel ports.

Thanks Phil for this video. I was able to create 3x2GB partitions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LzCB6kDVC8

Serial mouse is a Kensington Expert trackball. It’s pretty sweet. The graphics card is a Genoa 8500VL 1MB which is a rebranded Cirrus Logic CL-GD5426. Everything works great. It has a Creative Sound Blaster 16 and a 3COM Etherlink III ISA network card. Also came with a 14.4K ISA modem 😀

Thanks! It's some Arche case and that's all I know about it. I got it for free along with a socket 7 mobo (complete system) and a few SCSI drives via craigslist some months ago.

Those missing front bays made me think of maybe a 5~7" LCD which you can put in there. 😁 Great case.

Hah, I don't mind it really since there is a door that covers up the bays. It is a huge case and I bet I could fit a couple of ITX systems in there if desired (but I would not)

No criticism meant. Just gave me inspiration for something like this:

As also in another thread, there are others building a dedicated hardware for running MIDI/MUNT. But that's another subject

OK so I found what case it is, finally. Or at least what it is based on.

It's great! I gave it a RAM and graphics card upgrade. Going to move it to a solid state storage option soon (haven't decided if I want to go SSD or SD/CF with IDE adapter yet). I also want to nab a 1600 x 1200 monitor to run it on, but it's been hooked up to my main display with a VGA to HDMI adapter for now. 😀

It's just coincidental I found your thread talking about building it! Haha. Gives me more appreciation for it. 😀

It's probably the coolest machine I've owned. Glad you're enjoying it. Actually I have a 20" Dell 2007fbp which is 1600x1200 LCD. Good colors and image quality, works perfect on older machines. Suggest trying to find one on ebay or locally

where ?

sites like ebay man
you have to be lucky and constantly check

-i got 486 motherboards for less than 10 dollars
-i got a 386 motherboard for 5 dollars with case and pci cards.
-and this weekend i got a 286 motherboard with a harris chip for $20 dollars, i paid $20 because 286 is becoming more rare so i paid what the guy wanted, i didnt have a 286

now 8086 is extremely hard to find here. I still didnt see one yet. But i doubt i would buy one, 8086 territory is more of a CGA EGA era, i think with just the motherboard you can´t do much you need special hardware that was made for 8086

most of this stuff i was able to get not searching for motherboards, but searchinf for a full computer, Sometimes they sell a PC for example vintage or old PC, and you kind of know whats inside because of the case, you see the turbo button for example, or you ask them to take pictures from inside.
