Does anyone know if there is a decent gamepad out there that will work for both? My heart is set on the Xbox360 pad but I think it's only good for XP. Any suggestions would be welcome!

The wired 360 controller sometimes lists 98SE compatibility, also see some unofficial WDM drivers for them on MSFN.

There are 98SE compatible USB adapters for most older console controllers.

Your best bet is a PSX/PS2 to USB adapter. Then you can use either a DualShock 1 or 2 gamepad with it. Or, get an adapter that works with whatever your favorite controller may be:

I also have one of these and like it very much:

Ah you said decent. I was gonna say Gravis Gamepad Pro, can be used in Win95/Win98/XP. XP even has the drivers included but the pad is not that great for fighting games.

🤣 I was just thinking that, because I still have one. It's hooked up to my Win98 PC and it still works like a charm. I've been using it to play Final Fantasy 7 and 8. I remember it actually worked well on NES and SNES ROMs (most of which YES I do have the cartridges for the original systems on my shelf!).
