I've tested 5.9.1 in W98SE without any updates and the window for opening files and saving files doesn't show, so I have to open files by dragging them to the N++ window and I have to save them with ctrl+S.
I'm probably missing some important update on my W98SE installation, because I also am unable to use DAEMON Tools.

I've also read (don't remember where) that Notepad Plus Plus 5.9.3 should work, but haven't tested it.

Found the NPP repository...there are newer versions with ANSI support...didn't test them.
