I've been given a pentium machine with a sound blaster 16 ct2290 and separately an awe32 ct3900. On windows 95 with the default drivers the first card works fine and also restarting in ms-dos mode. However after i installed the awe32 i get no fm synthesis sound anymore. The resources are the same for both cards, i've checked the card and it's jumpered for opl at port 220. In doom i get no music when selecting sound blaster or adlib, either from within windows or restarting in ms-dos mode, however doom won't give any error. Selecting awe32 for music works however. Wolf3d also lets me select sound blaster for music and sound effects but i get no sound. Sound fx are fine for both games. I get no music either in doom95, prboom or when playing midis.
In windows i get a resource conflict in device manager for the advanced wave effects synthesis device but there are no conflicts listed, code 12.
Upon visual inspection the card looks fine, it has a ct1747 opl chip, but i get no fm music. The card was suspect, i got it for free and i was told there was a bad contact with another mobo and both serial port chips were fried. So i guess it's a bad card and there's nothing to do right?

are you loading the drivers to init the card when you reboot in dosmode (aweutil etc?) are you using ctcu/ctcm if needed (i dont think windows needs this since it does its own pnp setup).

No but that's not necessary since the card is initialized by windows and i'm not rebooting just exiting to dos mode. For wolf3d i need a sound blaster line in dosstart.bat to get sfx working. In windows of course the internal OPL synth is selected as midi device. As i mentioned wavetable and sfx are working in doom both in windows and dos mode. And for the other card everything was fine.

oh, you said 'restarting in ms-dos mode' which I took to mean booting into the bootmenu and not starting the gui on win95. my bad.

Finally the card is working fine, it has to be initialized with the dos drivers while the sb16 doesn't need to. CTCM is not needed since it's a non pnp card. 😀 I still get the hardware conflict for wavetable tough even after updating the drivers.
Had to reinstall windows since the crappy cpu cooler fell off and it overheated so the file system and the os itself got corrupted.
Edit: the resource conflict for wave effects synthesis is solved, just turned off automatic configuration.
