I'm kind of finding it difficult to choose between these couple of soundcards, both of which I can't find much on (nothing at all for my specific ES186X card-not even an image). I do have the drivers for both though, with the ESS card being recognised by Windows 98SE (SP3):

Which is going to be a better choice? Because unlike my AWE64, (dead) AWE64 Gold and Vibra16C, I don't know anything about both of them.

Edit: BTW, I will be using it with a Celeron 333A on an Intel SE440BX-2 (with onboard audio that sounds better than a SB Live Value, but doesn't work properly all the time).

the ESS card is supposed to have very good sbpro compatibility, and just get the generic ESS drivers off vogons drivers.

Looks like the Expert color card uses a Opti 931 chipset.

Atari 2600, TI994a, Vic20, c64, ZX Spectrum 128, Amstrad CPC464, Atari 65XE, Commodore Plus/4, Amiga 500
PC's from XT 8088, 486, Pentium MMX, K6, Athlon, P3, P4, 775, to current Ryzen 5600x.

I have both, and I can tell you that the MED3931's midi sounds awful ...
I'd choose the ESS
