I'm curious what these are, and where I can get cables.

I spliced one end of one of those connectors to an RCA cable, once so I could output, directly to my cassette deck--I made some awesome sounding tapes, that way!

CD audio input headers. Those cables are a dime a dozen.

I bought a few of these and they don't fit. They're too wide. These connectors seem a little smaller..

Those types of connector were common on sound cards prior to PCI hardware. By this point, almost everyone was on the same page using 2.54mm pin pitch jacks (which had been the ostensible standard for years).

Get yourself one of these and save a bunch of trouble.

That's quite a monstrosity! Where's a good place to find one? Or even better, what are those kinds of cables called (so I can maybe find a source myself!)

Search for "CD-ROM audio cable" on ebay or Amazon. Make sure the connectors are the right one for your sound card and CD-ROM drive. As you already found out, they vary depending on make/model.

If you can find one with multiple connectors on one end (like pictured above), buy those instead! It's nice to have universal cables.
