I've been having so much trouble trying to network my Windows 98SE and Windows 7 machines properly. Now, I can be able to access the W9x machine from W7 with no issues, even with password protection and made sure it had the same username.

The trouble is trying to connect to Windows 7 FROM the Windows 98SE machine. I've tried enabling NLTM 2 authentication on Windows 98, turning on LMCompatibility on Windows 7, changing HomeGroup settings to use user accounts and passwords, and changing folder permissions on Windows 7. All of the above has never worked for me.

Are there any other solutions to this or even any third-party solutions around this?

I seem to recall that you might need to use an unusually short and simple password in order for Win98 to be able to access Windows 7 shares.

Perhaps smbclient might be worth a try, just for troubleshooting purposes? I used a Cygwin-compiled version once, long ago.

If all else fails, just forget about Windows networking and use SFTP. (You'll need to install an SFTP server like CopSSH on Windows 7 for that to work.)

Also, are you trying to browse the network shares from your Win98 computer? You might have better luck trying to access a shared folder directly, or perhaps even by IP address (that is, by typing \\computername\sharedfolder or \\192.168.xxx.xxx\sharedfolder in Explorer).

I think that if you configure Win7 without Homegroup (just Workgroup) and enable password-less guest access to shares, it should work.
