In the 486 I'd get graphical corruption on the bios startup screen and the bios itself (like ascii/ansi characters all over), now I can't turn that system on, though I think it just finally died after being turned on and off too much.

The pentium socket 7 board would not boot with it in at all - one long beep, three short, which from memory is a video card problem. All irq's in the bios are set for legacy isa, is it just not realistic to expect a socket 7 board to boot with an isa video card?

If your board has ISA, there's nothing questionable about booting with an ISA video card. It's the card that might not be compatible, not the motherboard.

Dirt on the ISA connector? Use the soft side of a rubber to clean. Als re-seat any socketed chips on the card.

Also, if the card is way too ols its BIOS may be CPU speed sensitive.
