I've been given a pentium mmx on an asus sp97-v without a psu, i've got a spare psu but i don't want to screw anything. I know the brown and black are the live feed and the blue and white are the neutral wires. In know brown must be connected to black and blue must be connected to white, right? The (lack of) information on the subject is misleading. The problem is this crappy Achieve psu has two pairs of black and white wires, i guess colored wires were too expensive for them. The answer should be obvious, just connect black to black and white to white, but i'd like to have it confirmed before blowing up anything. Thanks.

Same thing with my 486, the power supply only has black and white wires. iirc looking at the switch from the front, the two white wires are the top and bottom right ones.

I'll get pics later.

FSP still produces new AT psu for industrial use (FSP Fortron SPI-250G), was looking into it awhile back myself and converting a ATX PSU. When I get home I'll check if I still have my schematic lying around for converting the PSU.
The mobo manual also has the schematic iirc inside, just check ASUS. You can combine this with a voltage meter 😵 just in case.

never cut your wires to soon

Of course, thanks very much. I think the position of the wires doesn't matter as long as live faces live and neutral faces neutral (black faces black and white faces white).

I'd disconnect everything from it just in case you hooked it up wrong anyways to test it, since the switch directly turns the psu on.

I felt brave and connected everything, the machine it's working now. A wrong connection could kill even the wall plug.

Glad it's working. When connecting the power supply to the button, as long as you get live to live and neutral to neutral connections when pushing the button then it's OK (you can test this with a multimeter before plugging the PSU to the wall outlet). Your assumption of matching colors is safe enough (it would be a stupidly dangerous decision of the manufacturer to use the opposite colors for live and neutral in the two pairs of wires), but if you want to be extra careful you can open the power supply and see or test where each wire goes.

try connecting your power supply at home or your car/motorcycle when all they used were black wires (+, - and ground), Happened to me in my house when I was reconnecting all the electrity in my house and car (car was professionally done) and to my dad when he was working on his motorcycle (professionally rebuild). Companies often do this just to demotivate people to start tinkering with dangerous stuff themselves (and call a company to fix it) 😠 . Then again a simple multimeter is the best solution (and using proper wiring after that)
