Dear fellow board members,

I recently bought 2 LS-486e boards, one of them is a non functioning board (rev C2) and I would love to revive this board. I was hoping that it was an easy fix, it turned out to be a bit more complicated. Maybe someone can give me a few hints to look for?

After the PSU powers on nothing happens, no beeps.

CPU I'm using to test is a Intel 486SX 33MHz
contains eeprom 27c1024, dumped the contents, it looked OK. verified a few bytes (bootblock). I also tried swapping it for a 29ee010. I think they are pin compatible.

Things that I already tested (with motherboard stripped):
* jumpers, OK
* main power from PSU, OK (Power supply runs other boards just fine, harddisks are spinning)
* 12, -12, 5, -5 pins checked for shorts, NONE
* 5 volt between cpu vss/vcc pins, OK
* Checked most (visible) caps for shorts or low ohms, NONE

Post card ISA:
with cpu:
* 3v3 led blinks 2 times then stays off (very short, direct after power on)
* 5+ led on
* 12+ volt led on
* Digits are off

Without cpu:
* 3v3+ led on
* 5+ led on
* 12+ led off
* digits are on but -- or 00

Post card PCI:
With cpu:
* +5 led on
* +12 led on
* -12 led on
* IRDY on
* CLK on
* RESET on
* sometimes displays 00 or --

without cpu:
* +5 led on
* +12 led on
* -12 led on
* IRDY 1 second bright, then dim
* CLK 1 second bright, then very dim
* RESET 1 second bright, then dim

JP-18 (FSB), how have you set it? 1-2 or 5-6?

EDIT:
Besides that FSB thing, I needed to change the voltage regulator on my board.
Though my issue with the regulator prevented me from booting a non 5V CPU.
These two things are my best guess at what could be the problem, namely
the regulator and the FSB jumper. The manual is wrong on the FSB one.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

JP18 is set to 1-2 (33MHz) also tried it without, making it 25Mhz according to the manual.
It looks like the RESET line is pulled low for some reason.

William

Try 5-6 and see what happens.

As far as I can see pretty much the same thing, it won't post no change in behaviour on my post card. 🙁 I'm interested however why use 5-6? I know it "should" run the board and cpu at 40MHz which isn't documented, I use this for my other board and a AM5x86 that runs 160Mhz 😀

Also, I run my cpu at 5volts, verified with a multimeter. So the regulator thing should'nt be a problem at this point. Also tried a different cpu, 486DX of which I know it works.

As I wrote in my first post. The manual is wrong on the 33mhz FSB settings.
The correct settings are 5-6 and not 1-2 for 33mhz.
