The same happens with my 386 motherboard - ECS UM386. Both share the same IC - UM82C482AF.

My set of 8xMB sticks from Fujitsu is recognized as 4MB on both motherboards, if I use any half of the set it's also recognized as 4MB, but mixing 4MB of Fujitsu with 4MB of GoldStar SIMMs allows me to get all 8MB visible. Some strange memory/chipset incompatibility.

486: ECS UM486 VLB, 256kb cache, i486 DX2/66, 8MB RAM, Trident TGUI9440AGi VLB 1MB, Pro Audio Spectrum 16, FDD 3.5, ZIP 100 ATA
PII: Asus P2B, Pentium II 400MHz, 512MB RAM, Trident 9750 AGP 4MB, Voodoo2 SLI, MonsterSound MX300
