VOGONS

Good day folks!

I've been looking for a 486 system to suit my tastes and I found one. An old AST Advantage Adventure 575. It was between this and a Vectra. The vectra had the bonus of PCI, but the AST had the bonus of 40 and 50 MHz bus as well as a beloved 5x86 133 already included (and was only 60$ plus shipping).

The seller happened to be very very close so I got the system in a day and a half after paying!

Now I do like black cases, and I like lighting and other "bling" if it is tastefully done. But when it comes to beige cases, I generally like them beige!

However, I wanted to try my hand at a little "case pimping" as it were, and this setup seemed a perfect candidate. A cleaning helped, but the case had a lot of gouges and scratches so I figured I'd man up and give it a shot!

Before and after shots. I think it came out awesome. Still need to paint the AST logo green, and I was going to also paint an AMD logo underneath it. Those two green bits should even out the color on the front and balance it out.

It is very green, but the somewhat matte finish as well as the shade of green itself I think add to the look and make it kinda vintage looking.

What do you think?

Having painted dozens of computers and game consoles in my day. I agree , it's very green.

One thing that can help in the future is to photoshop the case the color you want first before painting it.

My opinion is of course just one persons personal tastes so take it with a grain of salt. But i think if you're going to paint it with a very dramatic green , paint the entire case green like an SGI indy. Generally , you don't see a lot of computer manufacturers that make their cases one color with small amounts of beige vs all beige and small amounts of color.

Usually you'll want whatevers in bold color to be what you are emphasizing. if the entire computer is that bold color you want people to notice the whole machine. With only the case shell and some of the front the bold color , it says "look at only these specific parts" to me.

Perhaps you could paint the other parts in a shade that complements the strong shade of green.

And thanks for sharing with us, petro89. Case painting is not a world that I have entered just yet.

I think it looks nice, but I wouldn't have painted it in any color other than the original one, considering it's a brand PC. No-name beige cases I don't have a problem with custom paint jobs. I say this because I also changed the looks of an original HP Vectra case once only to regret it some years down the line.

That said, the only thing I think looks a bit off is the 5,25" drive bay cover painted green on the front.

I like the the green colour even if it is a brand system! It could have been much worse...

Thanks folks for all the comments! Like I said I generally prefer to stay original but this was a good candidate for something different to me. I went with the green because of the AMD theme and logo i plan on painting on it, but also I wanted something loud/unique, not unlike the big green or yellow refrigerators from the 70s 😀

I agree the slot cover throws it off a bit, but i am going to paint the AST logo the same color, and add an AMD logo in the blank space under that.

Anyway, I'm overall happy with it. There are a couple small spots where I oversprayed, but for a first time the overall paint job itself is acceptable to me.

This will be a pure DOS setup. It has an AMD 5x86 133 @ 160 rock stable at stock voltage. 64mb ram, cirrus logic 5440 1 mb onboard video, ESS sb pro compatible card. Runs the classics like a champ. Quake obviously is too much for it, but I prefer doom/doom2 and duke3d anyway. Played a little sim city 2000 and Dark Sun Shattered Lands last night!

Looks great the way it is! In my eyes the beige/green combo looks cool, I say run with it!

Oh boy...A buckeye approving of the work of a wolverine...in the color of a Spartan.

Something has to give! 😊

Full disclosure would dictate that although I do not like Ohio State, I absolutely despise Michigan State. So wolverines and buckeyes can in fact get along.

That brings me to my next dilemma, I apparently didn't think the green all the way through. But my love for AMD is strong, and we will chalk it up to that...no Spartans involved. 🤣
