Plutonia map32 where all the Mancubi are brings a 486-100 to its' knees. Going to underclock a pentium 133 later to see what the minimum system would have been to handle it. Do you know of any others? A map of episode 3 doom does it, can't remember the name, possibly unholy cathedral.

As far as I can remember Map11("O' Of Destruction"/Romero) is the first more taxing one with all the spacey sandbox levels by Peterson taking care of the rest.
Map14("The Inmost Dense"/McGee) was also pretty stressful especially when facing the array of sectors forming the "concave" opening which leads to the exit. The game really did become sluggish at this spot even without any enemies on display.
I still can remember a friend of mine who was trying to play Map32 on his 486DX33 and he quit because after a certain amount of spawns gameplay became unbearably slow.

Those were the days... **

You're all wrong. The correct answer is some of the beefier duke 3D maps (Although I can't list them off the top of my head)

and if you really want to stress shit, grab a copy of DOSDOOM (Which is incredibly hard to find, but it's out there) and set the resolution to a higher value. ZDoom Dos might work, but I was never able to get the sound to work on my AWE32/64

Is DOSDOOM really hard to find? It took me like 10 seconds to get to this:
