I purchased a GUS classic ver 3.7 the other day. It comes with just 256k of ram, it looked like 512k based on what I see, but... I think I can upgrade to 1mb or maybe 2?

The card requires the older 20 pin dip chips, UPD424256C80

These came with 80ns chips but can use faster. The questions that I have is,

How crippled is the card as is, 256k installed ram.

Is there a source anywhere that has these chips available? I have had no luck finding these except for ebay from the UK at $25+ each. Only other place asked for a rfq and has not responded. At that rate, cost is an issue!

I looked, and did a search for answers here but I did not find any answers. At GUS ver 3.74 the 40 pin dipS were used and those are more easily found... not that that helps me any.

Did I make a mistake purchasing this card?

I have never owned a GUS, (color me clueless) but have always wanted to own one and I was planning to use this in my new 486dx 33 VLB / ISA system. Still deciding on a graphics card. If anybody has a suggestion for that also?

You really need 1MB (the max) for the best compatibility, there is no reason to settle for less. DRAMs must be the 4256 variety at 80ns or faster , my card has SIEMENS HYB514256A-80 chips for example

I was about to ask a similar question for my GUS MAX which has at the moment only 512K : what RAM chip does it need ? It looks like it needs the same chips as those founds on PCI video cards, but I'm not sure of that ... Am-I correct or does it require some sort of special RAM ?

Thank you so much. That was very quick. Using you chip to search for, I was able to source 8 of these for less than $20 plus shipping! That beats paying $25 per chip any day!

For anybody else needing these, here is my source for the 256Kx4 20 PIN DIP chips this page lists it as 256Kx16 but the spec sheet states it correctly as 256Kx4:

Product page is here: https://www.utsource.net/ic-datasheet/HYB5142 … 70-1394014.html

Data sheet found here: http://www.datasheets360.com/part/detail/hyb5 … anufacturerId=0
