Hello! I am new to this forum. I am building my first 486 machine with genuine parts to get the whole experience, or at least I am trying. I have hit my first road block. I acquired an AT computer case but do not know what kind of power supply would fit the cut out on the back of my case or if there is a bracket or something I can buy to convert it to a normal AT PSU?

I have uploaded a picture of what I found on the internet that resembles exactly the style cut out that is found on my case. Can anyone give me some guidance?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards

That beast is a 5170 style full AT PSU. I've successfully avoided these things, so can't tell you much about how to deal with the form factor.

I've got a case like this that uses the same kind of PSU. Unfortunately it has been the only one I've ever seen... And now it's dead 🙁 I'll try to change the caps inside and see if it cames back to life. There was tape on the cables near the power switch and actually the AC wires are damaged ... I'm definitely not keeping this that way !

If I can't fix the board, I guess I could still try to replace it : it's the same size as other "normal" AT psu's board

Welcome to VOGONS!

The bigger issue could be the PSU power switch that must insert into the push button on the case. Often, you must have the correct adapter to fit. If you already have a PSU then you can reuse the adapter. Otherwise, the case may have an adapter built in? I would likely just modify the cutout and use a PSU like this... depending on the switch type you need.

But yeah, acquiring a matching PSU will solve just a part of the problem. Don't be afraid of doing a little modding to the case for sure since he functionality is not dependent of the aesthetics. This is true of both the cases PSU cut out as well as fabbing your own custom power switch adapter. Where there is a will- there is a way! 😊

I have the exact case for my 486. Mine did not actually come with one, so I had to source one from eBay. It's made by a company called Turbo Cool, a 300 watt model. I tried using a standard one and even tried an adapter, but the problem is the cables do not reach the board. They can be found on ebay sometimes for relatively cheap.

Thanks for all the ideas!

What I wound up doing was cutting a piece of steel to completely cover that opening and then cut out a standard AT opening within it. In the meantime, I am still on the hunt for a properly fitting full AT PSU. I seen a few on eBay for ~$100 but I do not want to pay that for a used PSU.

$50, not the best but not $100
