a youtube person with the name phil is saying to upgrade the to a brand new psu atx because the old at psu can die anymoment and damage other parts

so what kind of new psu do i need brand etc and does it need somekind of adapter !
iam scared now that it wil brake my other hardware
i realy like you picture of the old pc case you have 😀

Seasonic was and still is to this day a top tier PSU manufacturer. If you have a 150watt Seasonic psu the odds are still pretty good that it is a solid and safe unit to continue powering your system.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Its down to preventive maintenance
Just like a hard drive will die one day, so will the PSU, the difference is the PSU can kill other parts when it does, or maybe not, You just don't know
100% comes down to if you want to play it safe, I use old AT power PSU's myself but understand those who feel safer with a new PSU

If you do want to replace it just in case you will need something like this.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/ATX-20-PIN-to-AT-P8- … XkAAMXQ4uJSE26o

You need something to change the ATX power to AT style, but ATX power button is not the same as AT so you want something with the power button to mount to your case.
Your setup doesn't have any special or high power requirements, Any good brand PSU will be fine, and way more efficient then the old PSU as well,

It depends on the motherboard as there are three different Socket 7 motherboards:

One that has AT (P8/P9) only
One that has AT (P8/P9) and ATX
One that has ATX only

What is your motherboard manufacturer and model? Can you take a picture and post it on here?

150-200w at the minimum. There are two types of companies that deal in PSUs. OEMs that actually make the supplies, and rebadgers that buy OEM supplies and slap their name on it.

The best OEM tends to be Seasonic. Corsair also makes supplies, but I think it's only their high end ones. You don't have to feel bad about buying rebadged supplies though. EVGA is a company that tends to pick decent mid range supplies.

Rarely should you ever skimp on a PSU, but if you absolutely must,. I have had good luck with cheap Logisys supplies. Few have broken that I know of, but not in my hands, and they didn't take any components with them

However if you can spare the cash, get a new Seasonic, or just keep yours. This is before the capacitor plauge really hit companies hard, so the supply should be fine for at least another decade or so.

ehm, I doubt Phil would say something like this but its possible. My current unbranded PSU which I have lying around for test purposes doesn't require a recap, since the caps have like new values. There are only 2 reasons to replace a PSU: 1. caps are bulging and 2. you need more juice.
You can replace caps easy yourself if you have a decent soldering iron (small one) and since your current one is sufficient I wouldn't replace it at all and just recap it if needed.

If you can tell us the model of your motherboard, we can tell you if you need an adapter like the one chinny22 mentioned or not.

As others have said, the Seasonic 150W is more than adequate, but if you want to play it safe, even Corsair's low end VS350 PSUs will be suitable for such a system.

Even if the old PSU fails, there's little to no chance of it taking other hardware with it considering it's a well known brand. If you're worried about it, recap (change capacitors) the 150w AT PSU and you'll be fine. Using an ATX PSU + AT converter on an old machine is more trouble then it's worth. Besides the obvious (and unnecessary) expense and complication, you will loose the -5v rail (ATX PSUs don't have that) witch will cause issues with some ISA soundcards and even some motherboards (some 386/486 and early socket 5 boards don't correctly interpret the Power Good signal off modern ATX PSUs)

If you want to do something for your old rig, get the PSU to a specialist and have the capacitors replaced - or buy a soldering iron and materials and have a go at it yourself - it's quite easy once you get the hang of it.
