we know that many isa cards had hit the limit of isa bus and all perform identically fast in dos, including:
tseng et4000
cirrus 542x/543x
wd90c30/31
trident 8900d
following closely behind are ati mach32/64, weitek 9100 and acumos avga1, they are a bit slower than the fastest but still pretty good.

on the other hand, some cards are known for being extremely slow:
trident8800/8900/9000(except 8900d)
realtek3105
tseng et3000
paradise pvga1
and some other early vga cards.

apart from these, are there any isa video cards standing in the middle ground and performing neither very fast nor very slow?

I know the OAK OTI-077 & 087 cards are generally faster than the run of the mill Trident's. The HMC HM86304 seems to have middle of the road performance too.

Did anyone ever do an ISA benchmark thread? I am guessing that interest is rather niche for vogons vs something like vcfed.

Those are really the middle of the pack:
trident 9000
paradise pvga1
oti 067, 077

The slowest ones are:
oti 037
realtek3105
tseng et3000
Chips & Technologies 451
HMC HM86314

See these benchmarks (isa cards are all at the botton 😊 ):

i have read the benchmarks also(probably the one with most isa cards on the net), but feel that the trident9000 and pvga1 should stay in the slowest group.
if you look at the diag and quake320 results(other tests have fewer isa cards), you can see that the fastest isa card scores 3.1mb and 36fps, while a bunch of slow cards scoring 1~1.1mb and 10~15fps, although noticably better than the buttom of 0.7~0.9mb and 8~10fps, they are still too far away from the fast group to be considered middle ground.

There are some ISA benchmarks over at vgamuseum. Quite a few if I remember correctly.

true, he used a kt133a motherboard, which i think is almost the fastest platform with native isa slots, save for the third party isa bridge chips which are usually for special purpose, rare and expensive.

I'm really curious what makes the Machspeed faster. Is it using less wait states, or did they just overclock the memory and core?

Well, I was just indicating a desire for benchmarks covering the gamut of proper systems - something like 286/386/486.
