Hello,

This is my first post on Vogons. The reason why I've joined this site is that I've been interested in retro PC gaming lately and I decided to build a decent Pentium 3 machine for retro DOS/Windows 9x gaming.

And so I accquired this mysterious PIII motherboard from an used online marketplace website, with the 933MHz Pentium III (Coppermine) CPU and heatsink already installed.

I have no idea what company or model of this motherboard is, but hey, it has a VIA Apollo Pro133A chipset (VT82C694X) and an onboard Crystal CS4281 sound card, which makes it neat for a retro Pentium 3 build. Of course it uses the Socket 370 and there's a AGP slot and five PCI slots to go along as well.

But there's problems with this motherboard. One of the capacitors went bad (considering it might be a motherboard from that capacitor plague). What's even worse is that the motherboard wouldn't POST and would spurt out three short beeps that would repeat over and over again. I suspect it might be a bad SDRAM stick, since starting up the machine without a PCI/AGP video card and without the memory stick itself is no help.

To make sure I wasn't setting it up wrong I also needed a manual for the board and since there were barely any marking clues that might tell the model of the motherboard, it was just hard to find information about this board by myself, especially if a searching in the internet doesn't wound up anything. But there's something interesting in the back of the board itself:

It has the markings "YANG AN YA-3 E114139 94V-0". Another search on the internet doesn't help since apparently older motherboards also contain the same markings but different model from my motherboard, so I think the board is made by the same manufacturer (Yang An?) but they also manufactures different motherboards, too.

Can anyone help me finding out which company made this motherboard and what's its model? Your help is appreciated as I needed information and a manual for this motherboard.

Thanks,
RetroGamer00

It sounds like you need to replace the capacitors. The process is called RECAPPING. Those capacitors last 5 to 10 years. Sometimes places like ebay sell recapping sets but for popular mainboards typically. Any electronics specialist like radio shack, jaycar etc can find you replacements, many electronics repair personnel can do it all for you for a price. Easier and cheaper throw that board in the drawer get another for the cpu and pull it out later for repair after research. Research i hear you asking? youtube can teach you basics of soldering, reballing etc., the stuff you need to know before you go fixing things.

I don't recommend learning how to solder on these mult-layer motherboards with huge ground planes. It will drive you nutty and you will ruin stuff.

Best to learn at least the basics of soldering on simpler boards first, then spend time fighting the motherboards solder pads.
