Ok, I reseated the VGA card, and now it boots! Yay!
I think one or two slots might be botched due to my recapping, I will have to double check that and the caps near the slots.
Nice work, root42. I am tempted to perhaps recap the tants on my 486 board that I abandoned after cleaning up a leaky battery. Hmm.
I wonder what the esr was on your original caps
I can say that this was the most tedious soldering job I did so far, because it was very hard to get the caps out. In the end I used a thin, small conical soldering tip, which I could poke through the holes. And I held the cap from the other side, wiggling it and applying heat alternating to each leg, until it was free.
Problem is holding the board, the tweezers AND the iron. Best to have some clamps, buffered with something soft, anti static stuff...
I do not have an ESR meter, but now I am thinking of buying one. ELV in Germany has a kit for 50 EUR, which seems to be popular and quite accurate.
