I was wondering if I could have the same smoothness with a USB mouse on a PS/2 ball mouse. Is that possible without any problems or do I have to get a optical mouse?

Smoothness with a ball mouse is all about keeping the ball and rollers clean. It's just maintenance. Optical is no fuss, no muss. A ball mouse also won't have the movement resolution, if that's more of what you mean.

depends on the ball mouse, there are also very decent ones out in the wild.

These Logitech ones are really nice if you keep them clean.

I'd be interested to try one of the original Razer ball mice. I haven't seen one since reading about them back when optical mice were too slow for competitive gaming... that's a long time ago.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.
