I bought an MS6 6119 Rev 1.12 BX2 from eBay.

It arrived rattling around in a shoe box with no protection at all and CPU+ rentention had come out the board with the pins still installed, good job 😒

Aaaanyway it is not recognising my 60GB hard drive. It is on BIOS 2.7 26th October 1999. There are two versions of each revision of the bios on the MSI website - one for CPU Plug and Play and one for non PnP. PnP versions are prefixed with a P. Non PnP versions are prefixed with an S. mine is prefixed by a V!

The latest version date wise is p2.9 (1st December 2000). This adds support for ACPI BIOS. There is also a s2.9 for non PnP . The version before that is s2.a, which adds support for large IDE HDDs. However there is no p2.a for PnP boards!

Is my motherboard PnP or non-PnP? I have the little switches on the board to tell it what CPU is installed, but I can also set the multiplier and bus speed manually and independently.

If it is a Plug and Play board, hopefully 2.9 also includes support for large HDDs!

Post the string under the "PRESS DEL TO ENTER SETUP", I might be able to find out what BIOS you have to flash.

Okay...

With this being not helpful it seems (mixed reports from people saying it's either PNP/non-PNP), what board revision do you have?

It should say "MS-6119 REV:x.y" (where x.y is your actual revision number)

This is what I gathered from Wims:
"MSI site says Rev 1.1x is Standard mainboard Rev 1.2x and higher PnP"

I have "1.12 bx2". The bios very clearly says it is CPU PnP in the "special features" so I'm going to go for the plug and play bios. And also hope that 2.9 includes the 2.a hdd update as it is dated later...

Thanks for having a look

Here's an advice: scavenge another 2MB BIOS chip in the unlikely case that the BIOS update fails and flash it with a backup of your current BIOS. It's pretty handy as you can recover from a bad flash (as you keep your original BIOS intact on another chip).

I backed up the old bios whilst flashing the the new one. However the update worked fine and I'm now on 2.9 and my quiet 60GB drive is detected 😀 now I can get on a set it up like I was planning on 6h ago 😁

Glad to hear that. Again, make sure you recap the board though. The Chhsi caps they use are absolute garbage, along with the fact that they're probably nearly 20 years old.
