I used a VIA based card about 10 years ago, with VT6212L chip, just like the one I returned today. It worked without issues in a 440BX based system and it was used plenty. I even routed the internal USB connector to outside of the case, because I needed all four connectors. Actually I still have that older VIA card here.

The NEC card I received past week has its chip marked D720100AGM. It works fine in Windows 98SE, where it got detected as NEC uPD720100A.
