Aureal Vortex 2 locks up when entering DOS

The card works perfectly in Windows 98SE, but I can't get it to work with DOS. I use:

- the drivers provided by Phil
- the dos start PIF from Phil

When booting in DOS in the first option of Phils' menu it locks right after displaying the ports/irq/dma the card will function with. That does not happen when only the 'conventional memory' options are used.

I've added my config files (autoexec.bat, config.sys, audos.ini and the PIF file from Phil's. My experience with Windows98SE seems a little bit rusty (:
