Over the course of the weekend, I had purchased an IBM ThinkPad 380D in mint condition with all of the bells and whistles (10/100 and 56K PC cards, recovery media on diskette and CDs, including Lotus software, the manual(s), charger, and carrying case) and a Diamond Multimedia K2Y-PRO16 (Reveal SC400 Rev 4G lookalike) sound card. In this series, I'll be discussing about the system, it's original specifications, and the upgrades it can take for the system, such as the hard drive. The system originally had Windows 95 installed when new and it did come with the original media, manuals, and Lotus software. The laptop was manufactured in 1997, so for a 22-year old laptop, I'm amazed to see the laptop in this condition, which is sweet.

System specs:

Intel Pentium 150
12.1" DTSN (will replace with a TFT) display 800x600
Neomagic MagicGraph128ZV with 1.125MB video
Cirrus Logic (Crystal) CS4236B audio controller
1.44MB 3.5" FDD
CD-ROM drive
48MB EDO RAM (has 16 on-board and 32MB in the slot)
1.35 HDD, upgradeable to a 5GB IBM TravelStar HDD.
IrDA 1.1
PCMCIA slots (either 2 Type II, or 1 Type III)

* created a boot disk with the CPU tools: CPUCHK and NSSI.

Items that came with the system:
1) Carrying case
2) Manual(s)
3) Recovery media (boot diskette, recovery on CD)
4) Lotus software on CD
5) Charger

Granted, there are people that say the Crystal CS4236B isn't the best, however, it's better than nothing and purchasing a docking station/port replicator can add a MIDI/Joystick port to allow me to use a Roland SC-55 and a joystick to play DOS games or Windows games with ease. There isn't a built-in modem, however, the system has a 10Base-T & 56K PC card installed, and I also have PC cards for the system itself in case I want to use one. For the price and condition of the laptop, I cannot complain whatsoever.

Currently, the system is giving out two error codes:
161 - Dead (or low) CMOS battery - Defaults loaded
163 - Time and Date incorrect

The battery on the 380 Series laptops is located at the RAM compartment.

There are a couple of different batteries for the 380 Series laptops: CR1220 for the 380 and 380D in a socket, and a CR2025 (380E, 380ED, 380XD, 380Z). You can buy a new CR1220 at your local grocery store, convenience store, or computer store (if they have any), and the CR2025 uses a 2-wire connection that hooks into the connector on the motherboard and can be either purchased new on eBay (recommended) or you can use a CR2025* battery on there by MacGyvering it (removing the old battery and placing the new one in and wrapping it with either electrical tape or heat shrink tubing)

* Note: this method requires that you put the leads on the right way (red is positive, black is negative on the wiring, and + is positive, - is negative on the battery) and it's not recommended, however, you can change the battery easily. Preferred method would be buying a new one off of eBay.

The laptop itself is in mint condition, however, it requires the battery to be replaced on the machine in order for it to boot (NEC and Packard Bell machines did that as well, and some other systems requires a new battery to let it boot properly, otherwise, it goes back to the BIOS or boots to a diskette and not the hard drive, even if you save the settings).

See if it boots:

IT LIVES!!!

The one thing that isn't satisfying is the display, which is a DSTN display (ghosting image when moving the mouse around). My future plan is to replace the display with a TFT display and the other parts for it, but, the current display is still pretty good, so that's no big deal for the time being.

The recovery media works without issues. Stay tuned for further updates.

Allot of people think these laptops are broken because of the error messages when all that is required to fix it is to replace the cmos battery. I have a few of these ibm 380 laptops. The specs are not to good but these laptops are easy to repair for there time.
I have mine loaded with win95. I don’t have the recovery media so is there anyway you can upload an iso image of the recovery disk ?

Typically these come with the following specs:
3gb. hard-drive upgqadeabe to 5gb.
16mb. upgradeable to 48mb.
Build-in floppy and cdrom.
I use 3com 3c509 PCMCIA Ethernet card because I don’t have the IBM ethernet cards or software.
You can hook up an external display but I don’t know what resolutions the NeoMagic graphics will support ?
IBM provides great support for these laptops.

CDROM drives and TFT displays can still be found NEW on eBay but it NOT easy to replace display.

Lotus office was BIG in 1990’s because companies could purchase a site license where Microsoft wanted companies to purchase individual license keys for allot of money.

I still use lotus office today on my retro computers.

How is your battery?
Do you plan on rebuilding your battery ?

@Intel486dx33: The battery is completely dead, and Windows says the battery is at 80% charge. For the laptop itself, it's a really nice system, even the original hard drive still works. I have spare PCMCIA cards. I did find new TFT displays, but, they ship from China, however, there are displays from a 760XL that's a TFT, same size, however, it might be a different connection. Might purchase it sometime and change the bezels around from the mint system.

@Dragon Caesar: There are Docking Stations on eBay that are available.

That's how I got started with IBM thinkpads when I was given one for work. They gave me a docking station and stand too for an external display. I was hooked. I really liked these old IBM laptops.

Today, I just use Macs and iPads mainly.

But IBM was the computer to own back in late 1990’s
I think HP was BIG in early 1990's
And today Apple has taken over where HP left off.

These IBM 380's run DOS and Win3x and WinNT 351 great too.
IBM provides driver support for many old operating systems on there Thinkpads that's what I really liked about the thinkpads is that they had great driver support, easy to repair and upgrade, and good quality design and parts. However the old IBM thinkpad 380's or older the plastic has gotten brittle so be carefull when disassembling and small parts tend to break off.
There are lots of manuals and repair docs available online and parts lists.

The IBM 380 is as old as I will go in old IBM thinkpads because you can still find parts for them. Anything older is harder to find parts.

There's a website called Impact Computers that has parts (new or refurbished) for sale. I found a Lithium Ion battery, and TFT assembly parts for the ThinkPad 380D, however, I don't know if that site is trustworthy.

@Deksor: There is a site: Impact Computers, but, I don't know if they sell internationally.

@liqmat: I'll post pics and a video about the system later on today.

Do you enjoy typing on that thing? IBM ThinkPad keyboards were really nice for laptops.

I've bought something from them previously (replacement fan that had a specific custom shape that I couldn't find anywhere else). No complaints about them.

Also, glad to see you're happy with the 380D. There's one for sale near me that I've had my eye on... I'm thinking I may have to pick it up ...

Converted the file system from FAT16 to FAT32 using Microsoft's file system conversion software using a 3.5" 1.44MB diskette and booting into DOS mode.

My bestfriend, who is a female, isn't 16 or FAT. She's in her 20's, skinny, and attractive (to me). I now sound like I'm in love right now. In fact, I did talk to her when my family and I went to McDonald's before my brother's bowling league at around 9:15AM or something thereof. I thought something terrible happened to her (I'd never forgive myself if something happened to her). Now I'm off-topic. I'm 28 years old and dating a female that's under 18 isn't a good idea.

While on the ThinkPad subject, I turned it on to let the time a-changin'.

I took items out of the trunk of my car that are the following:

3Com Megahertz 10BaseT PCMCIA card (it had the 10/100 PCMCIA card in there, ah well) box
10-pack of HD 5.25" 1.2MB diskettes (will test in my 486 this weekend)
Microsoft IntelliMouse Serial and PS/2 (boxed with the software, no adapter, however, I do have one from the other IntelliMouse)
eMachines T3116 computer (going to take the guts out as the case is in rough shape and rusty-looking underneath)

Never leave electronics in your car's trunk because it'll spell bad news and wreak havoc (I let them warm up or cool down, depending on the Michigan weather), however, none of the items blew up after cleaning them while checking for bad or missing caps.

I then installed the 3Com PCMCIA 10/100 card in the IBM ThinkPad 380D (I kept the 3Com EtherLink III card for emergencies) along with the drivers (took 2 files to get the right one and the one gave me CRC errors) and I can access the network, but, my ASUS laptop refuses to connect to the ThinkPad for some reason, while my other Windows 9x machines, including my Windows XP and 7 laptops, and possibly my main desktop PC running Windows 10 Pro can access the laptop without issues (same username and password across every device without getting the \\PCNAME\IPC$ login prompt).
