My retro builds all use Adaptec SCSI host adapters.
Now the problem is that certain VGA cards conflict with these.
When these are plugged in, the SCSI BIOS does not come up, leading to the computer trying to boot from either floppy or CD.

My P3 build (i810 chipset, PCI bus):
Any VGA 64MB+ (Nvidia GeForce 2, Quadro NVS280, ATI Radeon 9250) makes the ASC-19160 (and 29320 as well) "disappear".
With older VGA (<=4MB) it works fine.
There is no difference whether I use Award or Phoenix BIOS, same problem.

My 486 build (HTK340 chipset, ISA bus, AMI color BIOS)
With S3 86C911, no AHA-1542CF is being seen.
With Tseng ET4000AX it works fine.

Any idea what could be the cause, and whether there exists a way to fix this behavior?

😳 That's the first single-chip 2D accelerator! It was named after a Porsche 911, I believe.

Yes, S3 chose Porsche numbers for their first cards.
911 for this entry card, 928 for the better one.
I think I was lucky to get that card cheap, it arrived today.

But if I cannot get it to cooperate with the AHA-1542CF, I won't be able to use it 🙁
