What is the bests or largest hard-drive for the Adaptec 1542cf/1540cf SCSI adapter ?
I plan on using this on a 486dx66 computer with scsi floppy, cdrom, and hard-drive.
What is a quiet scsi hard-drive ?

I use Fujitsu 15k U320 drives. Fast and quiet.

The 1542CF (when flashed with the latest BIOS) supports 8GB. If you use larger drives, it just truncates to 8GB.
As 8GB drives are old and slow, my 486 has got two 73GB Fujitsu drives, using only 8GB of each. As these server-grade drives are priced about Euro 10, I do not see any reason why to use slow, loud and unreliable consumer grade drives. They do not need trim and their data transfer rate is way better than SCSI2SD. Effectively, they are almost as fast as ramdisks.

There are adapters that exist (colloquially known as gender-changers) most I've seen are SCA80 to IDC50

Proud owner of a Shuttle HOT-555A 430VX motherboard and two wonderful retro laptops, namely a Compaq Armada 1700 [nonfunctional] and a HP Omnibook XE3-GC [fully working :p]
