Can you help me identify this cpu? It's a pentium III but i can't find anything else based on the numbers above the chip. The cooler is missing and i can't find anything else than what is on the picture. I dag this out of my parents basement but i have no memory of what it was.

Take the conductive greese off the top of the cpu.

There's a glitch in the matrix.

There are no marks on the crystal because Katmai Pentium IIIs were marked on the outside of the plastic case.

IMHO, the only way to know for sure is to plug the CPU into a motherboard.

That's a Pentium III with the Katmai core. Somewhere between 450 and 600 MHZ.

Look at the top edge of the black plastic piece. There should be some numbers on top like this:

500/512/100/2.0 S1
XXXXXXX-XXXX Malay or Phillipines
i(C) 98 SL35E

The first number is the clock speed in MHZ, the second is the cache size (512KB), the third is the bus speed in MHZ, the fourth is the voltage. The SXXXX number/letter combo at the bottom is the S-spec. If you Google the S-spec you'll get the all the details on the CPU.

It will be one of these models: www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium-III/TYPE ... tmai).html

Just taking a guess for fun, the cache chips appear to be rated for 3.6 ns or 277 MHz. So this may be a 550 MHZ chip.

i think you're spot on, will check again tomorrow and let you know
